Between the two, which is the safest and most effective way to clean registry?

For a start, regedit isn't a cleaner. Its simply MS' tool for changing the registry by hand.

On the flip side of that, Ccleaner is the only one I would really trust. Years ago there was one called Registry Mechanic, but I think that died out or became useless or something.

We need better choices...CCleaner is really the only viable option in the poll right now!

My bad then. I thought you can clean registry with regedit.

I put the "other" option there, because I've been hearing CCleaner a lot, and that's what I think is most popular. You vote for "other" and you can post your opinion in here.

Btw, what's the difference between Free, Pro and Business Editions? Is Free as good as Pro and Business?

CCleaner is safe and good registry cleaner.

You can clean the registry using regedit but its a 100% manual process. You go find the unneeded registry and remove it by hand. The reason people say its not a cleaner is that its more of an access tool. You can create, modify, delete, and edit any registry entry you want which is not really what a cleaner does.

As for what cleaner to use, I just use Ccleaner periodically. Unfortunately I can't really say what the differences are in the versions in terms of registry cleaning.

I will check out this CCleaner, but I have been using WinISO and have used it many time to clean my registry and even defrag it. it has other options as well like speeding up your boots by optimizing and cleaning out bad shortcuts made by programs. Might be worth looking into.
