What is the best CLI Linux/Unix for Folding @ Home?

Thread Starter
After having recently finished building my newest gaming rig and server I found myself having 2 quad core systems (i7-920 and Q8800) laying around collecting dust. So I decided to simply load them up into cheap server rack cases and throw them into my rack and let them fold until they die. However since I'm personally not a big fan of Linux I only check out the popular distros about once a year so I'm not really familiar with what is the best light weight (preferably CLI) to run F@H to get the most PPD.

Any help would be much appreciated =)

My votes would go towards Debian Minimal/NetInstall or Arch. Both pretty simple to set up and both are completely CLI unless you say otherwise.

Thanks, I'll look into them. Offhand do you happen to know if they support remote logins when running only the CLI?

Just SSH in tongue.gif

Install OpenSSH on whichever Linux you choose, and grab PuTTy for Windows, type in server details and you're off to the races.

Currently looking at Debian as you advised so I'm downloading a .iso to play around with in vmware before I throw it onto an actual machine. When downloading it theres 3 DVD images... 1 (3.7GB) 2 (4.4GB) and 3 (4.4GB) is the image that large that it requires three discs? Is it three different versions? Any idea? (40 mins left on download)

Disc 1 is the only the base install, the others are just extra packages that one may need if they don't have an active internet connection. But that's the regular install and not the Net install tongue.gif

Yea I realized they were at least the regular installs, I like to play around in the GUI to get a better feel for the layout/workings of an OS before I enter the CLI makes it feel more natural/familiar that way. Thanks for the info though =)

Most distros with multiple discs have a base and extras. I've found just installing disc1 and then using the net for your packages is easy enough. Granted that requires good internet, depending on your standards of course. Debian is a prime example of that, disc1 is all you need, everything else is in the repo or on an additional disc.

I like GUIs because that's what I'm primarily in, it's the 20th century now. I don't expect to spend my time in CLI doing things, while we have terminals most of my time is spent in programs with a GUI so I expect to be doing that. I guess it's a different perspective, still enjoy the layout of a system. It should fit the user, if I feel it lacks then it is time to move on.
