Windows won't boot up: Need ways to boot to Windows and repair what is wrong

Hello,

A colleague of mine somehow has the idea that I would know my way around computers. Maybe that's because I'm fat, unkempt and long haired. wink.gif

Well, I don't know much about computers but at least I know where to ask. We made an appointment and I agreed to look at her rig tomorrow evening after work.

I didn't ask for many details and she probably wouldn't have been able to answer anyway, since she expects expertise from me. She just said her computer does not get into Windows anymore, she is just asked at one point to press F1 for a reboot or smth. I don't know any specs of the system and she is not at work atm.

I have looked a round a bit and found five ways to boot the system.

1. F8-> Last known good configuration
2. System Restore
3. Replacing corrupted system files with the OS CD by CMD->SFC /Scan Now
4. Uninstall incompatible software
5. Repair registry errors with a registry cleaner like "Registry Easy"

I want at least try these and possibly mess around a little in Safe Mode (that's via F8, right?) before reinstalling the OS and possible lose data she wants to keep. Could any of these work, do you know any other ways.

Thanks.

Skinny Unkempt and Long-haired computer programer here

if its windows 8 then press shift + f8 after reboot for safe mode (assuming recovery partition) if shift+f8 doesn't work then get into her bios boot menu and put the WINDOWS BOOT LOADER at the top of the list / manually select it.

Also be sure her machine is posting (does not boot) could mean it doesn't actually turn on, Her computer should have a logo before it goes into windows (toshiba, asus, dell) she should normally see something before the windows logo.

IF she is having the problem I had with my windows 8 box a system restore from recovery may TEMPORARILY fix her problem, but I would follow it up with the windows memtest tool and If you can get into safemode you may want to run chkdsk.
Code:
For chkdsk forced on boot enter this code into a cmd prompt window that has admin privileges

chkdsk /f C:

this will force a checkdisk uppon next boot (replace C: with any drive letter that contains or even cache's Operation Critical Files)
It may just run on the spot but generally won't run on the boot drive while windows is running

IF YOU CAN GET INTO SAFE MODE CHECK FOR BLUE SCREEN MINIDUMPS

You can use this Blue Screen Viewer to return to us or Google with a detailed error report and potential causes for the problem.

Best of luck post back when you have more for us

Sorry, I totally forgot to reply. The next day she left for her two week vacation without even saying anything. I thought we had an appointment. rolleyes.gif
