Need help choosing my next AMD processor please!

Hello, everyone.

I'm looking to upgrade the CPU and possibly the motherboard in my main desktop, but definitely CPU for sure.

I currently have an AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition CPU at stock 3.4GHz installed in an MSI 970A G46 AM3/AM3+ motherboard.

There are two CPU's I'm looking at, the AMD A10-6800K 4.1GHz quad-core APU, and the AMD FX-8350 4GHz eight-core CPU.

My main questions are:
- At stock clock speeds, how well does the A10-6800K perform in comparison to the Phenom II X4 965 BE? Does it perform better, worse, or the same, and in what aspects? If I were to overclock the A10-6800K to let's say... 4.6GHz, would there be a noticeable gain in performance from stock 4.1GHz, or...?
- If the A10-6800K at stock speed performs better than an X4 965 BE at stock speed, how well would the A10-6800K perform in comparison to the FX-8350 at stock clock speed?

I can get the A10-6800K for about $170, and then a motherboard for about $100, so about $270 total.

OR

I can get an FX-8350 for $230 on its own.

Question:
- Will I notice a gain in performance (specifically in games) going from a Phenom II X4 965 BE to an A10-6800K?
- Will this gain in gaming performance (if any) be similar to the gain in gaming performance going from a Phenom II X4 965 BE to an FX-8350?

You will see a much larger difference going to an 8350 over the A10. This is a rule for AMD: if it has an A before its model number that means ASS for gaming. In other words, avoid the A series for a real rig.

I'd say go with the 8350, no point in having a GPU in the CPU if you aren't going to use it. Also, I have an 8350 for sale, $145 shipped. PM me

Stick with what you have right now and wait for Steamroller.

32nm bulldozer architecture CPUs aren't bad (particularly Piledriver), but they're still not worth going from a Phenom X4 965 to.

Stay away from the A10-6800K since you already have a dedicated GPU.

You can find a FX-8350 for much cheaper than 230CDN if you look. Under 200...

What is it that your current CPU is keeping you from doing?

The FX-8350 will not run full load on this motherboard due to VRM capacity. If you get the 8350, you will also need to factor in the cost for a new motherboard.

Actually, the FX-8350 is $200 + tax + possible shipping everywhere I look, if not more expensive, so no, I actually can't get an FX-8350 for under $220-$230 where I live.

Steamroller isn't coming out for a while yet.

I somewhat want to replace my motherboard anyway, since it doesn't fit in my case properly.

So, if I factor in a decent motherboard, let's say say $160 to be safe, then that's $230 for the FX-8350 + $160 for the motherboard, total would be almost $400, if not more, depending on what motherboard I get.

FX-8350 + new motherboard = $400

A10-6800K + new motherboard = $270

Will I see a performance gain at all going from an X4 965 BE to an A10-6800K in games and applications?

If you're willing to dish out $400 then consider your options. Heck, you could find a used 2500k and a P67/Z68 motherboard with cash to spare. You could probably buy new ivy/haswell for $400 depending on configuration.

The A10 is decent as an APU. But forget about it for use with a dedicated GPU and expect it to perform better then your Phenom.

Don't mean to be that guy, but there really isn't much of an upgrade you can make on the amd side.

I'm not willing to spend $400 though lol

I also don't buy used computer parts (aside from cases.)

I just want to know if I'll see any actual performance gain going from an X4 965 BE to an A10-6800K.
