AMD had quad before Intel with Socket G34.

is there an intel platform that you cannot disable HT on?

most systems anymore have bios profiles that let you swap setups by simply rebooting the system and selecting a different one. and anymore you can usually do it inside the OS before restarting.

Well, if you disable it then it's not a benefit anymore, it is? tongue.gif

It makes sense to make everything run off of one platform. Consoles soon to become preconfigured, non-modifiable PCs?

I welcome that day. What if the gaming industry itself just did away with proprietary consoles, just have a gaming market built off of one unified platform and let any company build a console?

Your copy of your game could be playable on any home gaming console or PC independent of manufacturer.

Like your blu-ray movie being playable on any blu-ray player, be it Samsung, Sony, etc., your game would be playable on any 'multimedia console'. The manufacturer would be free to build the console to whatever specifications as long as they met or exceeded the industry-determined minimum specs for that generation of console.

We could be free to purchase whatever controllers we preferred and pair them with any console, etc.

Personally, that's what I'd like to see the industry evolve towards - an a la carte model. No need to pour billions into R&D for a proprietary piece of equipment, just decide upon an industry standard for the current generation guts and then try to make the most appealing console you can.

That's actually really cool. One of the main problems with games in windows is because they all use directx, which means that it perform much slower than pure native code optimized for the architecture. Since AMD CPU and GPU is already in those major consoles, maybe the ports of the game won't use directx, which means better performance without having to spend so much on graphics cards.

Great for the farmville and angry birds crowd. Oh well, I guess cannibalizing the low end of their GPU market is an achievement.

I can play Skyrim with my settings on High with my APU, The apu's are great for people who have a small budget and Kaveri will only make it better.

This is why I will be getting an AMD card as my next gfx card unless there is a huge performance difference. I don't know if this is marketing BS, but if its true great for the PC community. Actually I have been pissed for not being able to play The Last of Us, if making ports will be cheaper, there will be nothing stopping developers for making more games multiplatform. More money for them, more games for us. Win win...

AMD wants to work with programmers to write applications portable across gaming consoles and PCs
http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/news/desktop-pc/3450872/amd-hopes-to-bridge-gap-between-xbox-playstation-and-pcs/

Quote:
Advanced Micro Devices has announced a new strategy that could lead to
games that run in the future across PCs and games consoles like the Xbox and PlayStation.

The company announced Wednesday its "Unified Gaming Strategy," which the company hopes
will make games playable on PCs and gaming consoles with minimal modifications in code.

AMD will work with developers on writing games that can be run across PCs, mobile devices
and through the cloud, AMD executives said at a press conference Wednesday at the Computex trade show in Taiwan.

Writing games for consoles has been specific to the hardware, and the current Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 are not
based on x86 processors. AMD now has an opportunity to break the barriers and unite gaming on consoles and PCs,
said Matt Skynner, corporate vice president and general manager of the graphics division at AMD.
Quote:
Kaveri could also be a step in bringing console gaming closer to the PC level, though the results could be a few years out.
Kaveri sets a new standard in harnessing the combined processing power of the CPU and GPUs with new integrated technologies, Su said.

Kaveri is the first chip based on the specification established by the AMD-led HSA (Heterogeneous System Architecture),
which aims to make applications portable across different devices including PCs, game consoles, tablets and smartphones.
The specification abstracts the processing units in a system, making it easier for developers to write code without worrying
about the specific processors on which it will be executed.
