Rare single loop configuration and high CPU temps?

My system configuration:

CPU: X79 3970X (OC to 4GHz)
GPU: 3way SLI Titans
Top Rad: EK XT-360 (push/pull) push/pull air to outside
Front Rad: EK XT-240 (push/pull) push/pull air to inside
Fans: Corsair SP120 Quiet
Pump: Dual Swiftech D5 PWM
Pump Top: EK D5 Dual Top
Res: EK 250MM
Fittings: All EK
Tubbing: 1/2 X 3/4
CPU block: EK Supremacy with J4 jet plate
GPU blocks: EK Titan full cover
Coolant: EK Coolant Clear
The most common single loop configuration, I've seen is
config_A= (pump/res -> GPU -> CPU -> rad -> res).

I am using the following rate configuration
config_B=(dual pump/res -> GPU -> top 360 rad -> CPU -> front 240 rad -> res)
I thought cooling down the warm water from the GPU before it touches the CPU lower's the CPU temps better.

Here are my temps:
Ambient: 26C
CPU: idle=39C load=54C
GPU: idle=29C load=35C

I'm really happy with myGPU temps, but the CPU temps are bugging me.
I flushed the entire loop last night and removed the CPU block, re-applied the TIM, and reseated the block and the CPU temps didn't improve.
I experimented with different pump speeds (low -> high) and high gives me the best temps.

Do you guys think Config_B is the problem here? If yes, why?
Would switching to Config_A improve the CPU temps?

I think the problem here may lie in your flow rate. The fact that you are getting noticeably different temperatures when going to high pump speed would lead me to believe that your flow rate is quite low to start with. There are a couple of things you can do here - change to loop order to give shorter runs and less tight bends or put your GPUs in a parallel flow arrangement.



Another option is your rad air flow direction. The front rad is dumping warm air into the case, the top rad is taking that warm air and recycling it. This will kill the effectiveness of your top rad. Try putting both rads either as intake or exhaust, and adjust any other case fans to suit. See if that helps at all.

Hi John,
Thanks for your reply. I tried different the fan directions and that didn't make a difference. In the current configuration, there is only one tight bend going from the top rad to the CPU block and everything else is pretty short and straight. I think you might be right about the flow rate though. I'm gonna try the Config_A (pump/res -> GPU -> CPU -> rad -> res) to see if that makes a difference.

Considering the immense amount of heat your computer is generating, I'm actually impressed with the temps considering the amount of rad space. I don't know if you will be able to improve on them much without more rad space and quite possibly a second pump...

Hi nleksan,

I already have two D5 pumps.

I just wish someone was making the water-blocks for the P9X79-E WS motherboards. That would definitely improve the temps inside the case.
I reconfigured my loop to (dual pumps/res -> GPU -> CPU -> top 360 rad -> front 240 rad -> res) last night. I am waiting for my TIM to arrive today to complete the job and run the system again tonight. Hopefully, CPU temperatures will improve. I also replaced the latest J4 jet-plate back to the older J3 plate for better flow.

I've been doing a bit of research and it looks like the X79 chips get really hot anyways. I will post the result tonight.

I think your CPU temp is OK. Also dual D5 is enough for your loop (not super, but it's optimal). Do you have a flow meter and temp sensors (and a controller of course)?

And I think "CPU -> GPU 1/2/3 -> all of your rads", it's pretty optimal loop config.

Those temps look fantastic to me. The CPU isn't clocked all that high but I am use to seeing 70C w/ my 3930K. Changing loop order around really should have no affect on temperatures. The water quickly reaches equilibrium due to how small the loops are.

@booyda, The temp sensors, flow meters, and aquaero 5 are definitely on my todo list. I'm gonna wait till the end of this month to see if anything new will come out. biggrin.gif

@lowfat, I agree with you regarding the effect of the configuration on temperatures. In addition to re-configuring, I also removed and corrected a couple of tight bends and turns in the loop that will improve the overall flow. Hopefully, that will improve the temps a bit. I'll find out tonight.

I guess you've already made a change, but the above is correct although it's not a big effect. If you want the absolute coolest possible water hitting your CPU, put it right after your rads.

Just don't expect a big change. Generally speaking, loop order only has a small impact on temps, a few tenths of a degree C in an average setup. So while it's not zero, for most people, efficient tube runs and other practical/esthetic considerations outweigh whatever small benefit might be gained from the absolute best loop order.

But you're running three titans? In your case the heat coming off three GPU's will likely have a bigger localized effect than in an average rig.

This is probably the worst possible loop order in terms of water temp as it hits your CPU. Again, the impact is probably only going to be quite small, but if you're chasing a half a degree or so, this isn't the best way to do it.

Hi ThreePhi,

Although the aesthetic was a consideration in building my loop, it took a back seat to the performance. I tried to run my tubing in the most efficient way the case and the components would allow me.

As of today, I'm not pursuing temp reduction in even a degree or two. biggrin.gif As you mentioned changing the loop order will not have a drastic effect on temp reduction anyway. sadsmiley.gif

But what baffled me was that the three Titans were running much cooler than the CPU,
Ambient: 26C

It is true that the CPU is receiving warm water from the GPU's but the GPU's don't warm up the water that much. In addition, under the older configuration (GPU-> rad -> CPU), the warm water from the GPU's was getting cooled down by the top rad. So why the drastic delta T for the CPU? confused.gif

I've ran the GPU's under full load for a couple of hours and their temperatures didn't go over 35C.
I'd be very surprised to see a drastic drop in CPU temps under the new configuration tonight. I can't wait to home and run the system tonight. smile.gif
