7970 3xCrossfire

Thread Starter
I was thinking of getting a 7990 for my pc but since (in Ireland at least) The 7990 would be the same price as 3 - 7970's, i'm opting towards the 7970's obviously. On the other hand its in the back of my head that the new radeon series 9xxx (As 8xxx series seems as its going to be aimed towards the OEM) will be released by Q4 of 2013 if not Q1 of 2014. Honestly what are your opinions on the expected performance increase from the 7970 to it's successor. Obviously all this is theoretical but please feel free to enlighten me with your opinions, should I buy or wait? biggrin.gif

Allegedly the 9970 will be about twice as powerful as the 7970. Of course this is all rumours and unconfirmed however, it makes sense for two generations up should be that much more powerful.

It depends how well your current card runs whether you want to buy a new GPU now, although I certainly wouldn't invest in either the 7990 or the 3x7970 right now, I'd buy a single 7970 and sell it when next gen is released.

It's not going to be twice as powerful, and it never was going to be. What one can hope for is double the gains from a refresh which is probably reasonable given the extended product cycle. The most recent specs point to Titan level performance or +35%.

However it will be priced accordingly so it will not be directly competing against 7970s so whether you buy now or wait it doesn't really matter. The same or larger price gap will remain.

That said trifire 7970s is the sweet spot, there's nothing that system can't handle and its already within shot of trip Titans in benches. Again who knows what the next AMD gen will bring, but right now trip 7970s is damn fast.

Oh also 7990's are all about the four display ports. This is the card if you have 3 native display port monitors. Speed wise 7970s will outpace a 7990s.
