Need advice about overclock hassles

OK - I admit that my last post was a wall of text

http://www.overclock.net/t/1396280/need-help-stabilizing-my-overclock-at-idle-please-possible-c-states-problem

and perhaps thats why I haven't had any responses (that, and perhaps the fact that my rig is so old that its not worth bothering with redface.gif).

So, I'll ask a more straightforward question:

Can anyone give me some advice about where I should be focusing to solve a problem with my overclock

It is fine at load, during stress tests, memtest+ is fine, playing games intensively is fine. BUT, when I am at the desktop, surfing, or just leaving the computer alone, it BSODs every time, either with 0x116 or 0x119.

They both appear to be video card related errors and I also get the dreaded " video card stopped responding and has recovered" at the desktop, which usually then goes on to freeze and/or BSOD.

At stock, everything is fine and dandy. I've done everything I can think of as described in the "other" lonely thread tongue.gif

I have an i5 750, GA-P55M-UD2 mobo, Sapphire HD 5850 reference, 2 x 2 GB Crucial DDR3 9-9-9-24 1333 1.5v RAM, W7 64 bit, OCZ ModXStream 500w PSU

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Some of what you just described as well as the x116 error seem to suggest it has something to do with your graphics card. In your previous post you mention that the machine works fine when you are not overclocked...which is kind of odd as the graphics card is working anyways. Do you perhaps have another GPU to test? Your GPU is at stock, yes?

Thanks for your reply. Yes - the GPU seems to work fine. In fact, the GPU is overclocked by 20% on the core and memory with a slight bump to voltage, which I have flashed in the BIOS.

But, even if I remove the overclock on the GPU, I still get the same BSOD at idle when overclocking the CPU.

Whereas, I'm sitting here at stock on the CPU (with the GPU overclocked 20%) and it has been running for the whole day without a crash (14 hours so far at the desktop with Steam downloading something and Chrome open with a few tabs). That's my idle stress test because with the overclock on the CPU (with Turbo and C-states enabled), I would crash within a few minutes or certainly within 2 hours. I just wanted to be sure that i don't get crashes when idle with NO overclock.

How long have you had your Windows 7 installation? Sometimes a fresh install will solve weird problems like that and if you make a partition on your hdd you can transfer you steam stuff easily.

Sounds like your video card/driver.

I know I will get flamed for this, but don't/why overclock. lol

@drnilly007: yeah - I've been avoiding reinstalling Windows but its on my list as a last resort and I suppose it will be less hassle than I think.

@All3n: fair question. Why overclock ? Well, it helps me type faster for one thing. When I O/C I can see that the cursor moves so much faster, and I can actually read web pages quicker. I know you can't really measure it but when I open an app, like the Calculator built-in to Windows, I just *feel* like its calculating quicker, and that makes a difference to my day. Not sure if I'm *actually* shaving milliseconds off the time I spend waiting for Windows to calculate 35 x 8.93 x 1.175 but if it *feels* like I am saving that time then it just makes me feel happier I guess.
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
Nah, I O/C more for gaming I suppose biggrin.gif

Thanks for the replies so far.
