Money11465's Conroe Build [56k warning]

Thread Starter
I've ditched my 3700+ plans and will be going for an E6600. So far I haven't actually ordered any Conroe-specific parts, such as motherboard, CPU, or memory, but pretty much everything else is here. This beast will only have a piece of crap PCI vid card until Christmas, when I will have enough money to buy a 7900GT or so.

What my build will consist of:
E6600, hoping for 28-32B, will buy local because of this
Gigabyte DS3
Patriot 2GB DDR2-800
Some GPU, don't know yet
Sony DVD Drive
160GB WD HDD
Scythe Ninja and 2 TT Thunderblades

Here's what came today

My new Ninja

A monster tube of AS5 (12g). I need it because I will also be doing other people's computers with AS5

My kickbutt OCZ rebranded Fortron 50A 700W PSU

Cheapo case fans

My case, cheap, but pretty nice. Not a showy case, but more of a sleek one.

The inside. Notice the duct on the panel.

Switched that nasty duct out for a case fan.

Mounts for PSU were a little messed up. Dremel to the rescue! (This is after dremeling. Notice how the upper left mount hole is a little bigger than usual.)

My PSU mounted and ready to go.

The 120mm fan from the Scythe Ninja will be cooling my HDDs (I will RAID Raptors sometime in the future). Two red and black TT Thunderblades will be coming soon, they will be ducted and will cool the Ninja, along with the 120mm fan on the PSU and another mod I had in mind.

My $100 Sony DVD Burner - fast, quiet, 1337...
NOTE: It WAS $100. I got it for $35.

Just arrived - TT Thunderblades (I don't know if these are actual Thunderblades, but they look awesome and have the specs: 78CFM@21dBA)

I have yet to order stuff like a GPU (I will probably use an old VGA card for now and get a nice 7900GS/GT later on), a CPU (I plan on the E6600), a Motherboard (I plan on the Gigabyte DS3), and RAM (I plan on a pair of Patriot DDR2-800s). The CPU could potentially change to something higher, but since I want to hit 4GHz I will not go Allendale, only Conroe (E6600, E6700, x6800). The RAM is pretty much done, just have to wait for a seller to be done using it and then he will send it. I will pick up the E6600 from this site or locally so I can make sure I get a good week (L628B-L632B).

More parts! So far, my DS3 is the first of the second wave, and I am very happy that I got a Rev. 2.0! That means even better FSB, even though the original DS3 was awesome anyway.

The box.

All the cables, etc.

Motherboard on the anti-static bag. Notice the updated NB heatsink, and also in the (currently) upper-left corner it says REV 2.0.

Motherboard installed and waiting for RAM, on the way, and CPU, will buy locally. I'm trying to get some cheap cable management going up there, but this mesh sleeving makes it twice as hard. At least I don't have cables sprawling all over the motherboard like Dell.

My PWNage video card with absolutely NO COOLING! I will be using this until I have the cash for a 7600GT or higher.

RAM arrived today, one day after the DS3!

RAM with packaging

RAM on floor.

RAM installed and waiting for CPU

Silly question, but does anyone know if it matters which color I use? I know for dual channel they must both be in red or yellow, but does it matter? I picked red because it is farther away from the CPU, which will heat up the modules more, even if it is only 1 degree. I thought maybe it's like PCIe: Slot1=x16, Slot2=x8.

My final wave of parts arrived. My CPU was ordered along with the second, but because USPS was used to ship it, it arrived several weeks late. Whatever.

CPU came without a box but with a stock cooler. Also, some piece of crap ECS board came with it. That will go in someone else's build.

Here you can see the week: L630B

Here is my 7900GS in the box

And in my system

My hard drives for RAID0 (these are supposed to be extremely fast, second only to Raptors)

My new monitor, a nice 20.1" 5ms 1000:1 mid- to high-performing box

Here are some adapters, etc.

I ordered some thumbscrews to make opening the case easier on me, some 4-pin to 3-pin adapters to plug my case fans (and Tt Thunderblades) into my motherboard, a 3-pin splitter (I ordered one, two came) so my newly-adapted case fans can plug into the same plug header as my other 3-pinned case fan, and some RAMsinks to attach to my CPU cooler. I heard that doing this will help alot, even several degrees if they are placed correctly, and these were $5 at Xoxide, normal price $15 from Newegg, so I thought why not?

Why did you get a $100 Sony DVD Burner? Could you R.M.A it and get your money back? If so, you could get a $35 SATA DVD Burner and spend that $65 on Cooling, Lighting, etc.

Note: It WAS a $100 DVD Burner, I paid $35 after rebates/savings/etc. I would've done what you said if this wasn't $35.

Man, that ram is soooo nice looking! Where did you get it from!?!?!?!

You want to use those 2 yellow slots for dual channel. I am sure the manual will elaborate on the memory configuration.
