[IGN] Microsoft details on Xbox one used games and always online - Page 12

Oh, video games. What's happened to you? This is just so far beyond pathetic.

Had you asked me seven years ago where I thought gaming was headed, it wouldn't be here. How did it all go so horribly wrong?

They have no idea what will be waiting for them.

I know a lot of people that are both informed PC and Console gamers and they appreciate the console for its plug and play functionality, but now with all these new regulations, they will more then likely not buy the X-Bone. That will also cost X-Bone millions in sales. It will never hit the sale numbers of the X-Box 360 since even though there are a lot of misinformed people, there are many that are informed.

Parents will buy their 12 year olds these consoles and neither will have any idea about all the new controversies. That is what M$ is counting on. I can see many of these consoles get returned with statements like "it won't let me play my games - it's broken".

If the games look good to me come E3, or somewhere down the line, there are people like me who have no reason not to buy it.

I don't sell games, I don't buy used games, I have broadband, I WANT all those new features, I want to see games that use to the cloud to some degree if it gets more life out of my console, and I want to play around with that new OS.

Are these policies whack? Sure they are. But they don't affect me, so I'm completely indifferent. Doesn't make me uninformed though. We all take inherent risks when dealing with the web. Imagine if Gmail shut down for a day.......

WHAT ABOUT STEAM?
Can you trade games on Steam? I for one would like to 'gift', not sell, games to my brother or friends. Can I do that? Also, many PC games only work with Steam, like Skyrim or Total War. What if I don't want to have Steam on my PC?
SO much hypocrisy on these forums... You guys love, and hate, the same kind of DRM.

PS. About the pricing, a lot of people claim Steam's DRM is ok, since they have sales, and you can buy games cheaply. Two questions.
1. Do you know what will be the price of Xbox One games at launch, after a year, and whether or not there will be sales?
2. Steam sales are good and all, but what about their prices when new games launch. Are they 40% higher than amazon retail prices? But that's fine I guess.

People are ok with steam not being able to trade games and such because it is completely up front about what it is, a download only service. It's common sense that you can't trade a downloaded games and I can live with that because in return in an get many games at prices I can't get with physical copies. Now, actually shelling out more more money for a physical copy and having all these restrictions about what I can do with it are BS.

paying for a system that does nothing but games is a step backwards nowadays. Heck, even watches are starting to read out emails and texts....

But Steam isn't a download only service. Almost any AAA game you buy off the shelf at Bestbuy or other stores for computers require you to have Steam ( or Origin, or uPlay, etc ). But instead of having to download the whole game, you get the convenience of being able to install it normally, but it still requires Steam.

The two mediums have pretty much merged a while back. Just because it is physical, doesn't mean it's free from Steam ( unless we're talking about games that are released DRM free as a whole, which isn't many these days ).

The best thing about Steam/Origin is having keys tied to your account. I have too many games that I can no longer play because the installation disk has a minute scratch on it.....

I hope the Xbox One has something similar. Something along the lines of...

A. Is the game tied to your account?
B. Is said game also offered in the online marketplace?

If A & B are true, then you can download it anytime! I HOPE this is the case.

They can add all the non-gaming functionality they want to consoles, I don't care. I do care about ridiculous restrictions being imposed on used sales, sharing games and, most importantly, how that DRM impacts legacy support. Not in a million years will I support a closed platform like consoles that puts my long-term access to their library in jeopardy.

I can still buy games to play on my NES 30 years after the fact. Will I be able to say the same for the glorified DRM boxes that are Xbox One and, most likely, PS4? I doubt it.

very understandable. Do you have kids? What do they think when they see NES and those old school controllers?

No kids, and it's hard to imagine what they'd think. Most kids probably wouldn't want anything to do with 'em.

All I know is that being able to revisit older consoles' libraries for both recreational and academic purposes is very important to me. A platform that essentially promotes video games as a service (with an expiration date) is one that I wouldn't touch with a ten-foot pole, no matter how much I'd wanna play its games.
