7800 GS? or Monitor? turning off

Thread Starter
my monitor would randomly turn off while playing a game or while doing nothing, i've checked the power management and everything is set to never. i updated to the last nvidia drivers, and it still occurs. its the same effect when you right-click on the "nvidia settings" on the display icons where it flickers. what should i do?

How long have you had the card? What kind of temperatures are you seeing? Did this just start happening?
You say it happens in both 2D and 3D apps?
Did it do this before you updated the drivers ?
With a 7800GS I would avoid the 93.xx and newer drivers for awhile, real buggy with the AGP cards.
Try the 92.91 drivers from nZone at nVidias site. They are the best non modded drivers I have used for my 7800GS and I am a driver whore. I have tried them all.
Be sure sure to use Driver Cleaner Pro when changing drivers.

how do i check the temp of my videocard? i never really oc'd it before never tried. this happens anytime regard what the activity is, when my computer is idle without any apps running and showing the desktop it occurs also. i previously had the 84.21 drivers but i updated to see if that'd fix it but it didnt. ive owned this card for 3 months and this started happening 4 days ago.

Right click on your desktop--> nVidia Display--> Monitor Model--> Temperature settings, This is for the Old Control Panel.

For the new control panel.. Right click on your desktop--> nVidia Control Panel--> 3D settings--> Monitor temperature levels.

Have you cleaned out the Fan and Heatsink on the card, if not you need to unscrew the cover and check the fins of the heatsink. Dust will buid up and not allow proper airflow. If you have not done this since you purchased the card then there is a good chance your card is overheating.
Hopefully thats all it is, if cleaning out the dust does not help then other problems exist.
As reberto mentioned , what are the specs and model of your PSU? How old is it?

I am going to go with the monitor here. In most cases a malfunctioning video card will cause other symptoms, such as artifacts. The fact that it is ONLY your monitor, and the the fact that your system as a whole is not malfunctioning would lead me to believe it is the monitor. Just as a note, overheating and an under powered PSU would cause system issues, not something like a monitor turning off.

Does it actually turn off or does it go into hibernate mode, like a signal loss?
