AM3 backwards compatibility on AM2+ mobo

Thread Starter
I want to use an AM3 processor like the Phenom 2 x4 965 on my PC with this mobo,

Is this the correct driver for it? http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en&softwareitem=pv-73188-1

I tried to use this driver ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ but it only works on windows vista

Do I have to update my bios to use AM3 processors?

Is it a HP computer and motherboard? The processor is compatible but the BIOS does need to have support for it which doesn't always happen with OEM boards.

Sometimes there are people who can modify the bios to add compatibility there are forums that specialize in BIOS modding or you may be able to find someone on this site. I would recommend you try whatever manufacturer provided update that is available first.

Would It work if I dual-boot windows vista and install the drivers? I use windows 8 now. You think it will still work on windows 8 if I get a new processor?

You didn't answer my question smile.gif

Whatever processor you want to put in it may need to be officially listed as supported by the BIOS. Even if it is compatible with the motherboard it the BIOS may not support it. I do not edit BIOSes a lot and I have only done it to update firmware for controllers that the manufacturer never updated. I believe though that when I looked at changing my brothers HP processor I would have had to download someone's modded bios that had the newer processor in it.

I would start with the listed bios revision. It was fairly easy to do on both my brothers and my grandmothers HP. That is not a driver it is the software to perform the BIOS revision which once done is in a way permanent as in it isn't on the hard drive or in the operating system it is on the motherboards memory.

You are on version 5.07 the update is to 5.13

it lists the following

Fix/Enhancement
Updates AGESA source code to 3.3.2.4.
Updates microcode to support newer AM3 processors.
Updates RAID ROM to version 3.0.1545.55.
Resolves issue with optical disk drives not being recognized when a Hitachi Hard Drive is connected to the system.
Resolves issue with the system hanging when a Sony Memory Stick Pro Duo (4GB) is connected.
Updates fan curve for processor support.

you can use 7zip to extract the hp sp43099.exe file then you can run the winflash file inside the extracted files and flash from there smile.gif
post #8 of 20
Ok I misunderstood you a little bit on the first post I thought the CPU was only working in windows vista which was very confusing to me. Now I understand what you are getting at... the software will not run on whatever you are running right now.

As the person above said install winzip or WinRAR then right click on the sp43099.exe and extract the files... I believe the actual bios file is the file called asp5.13 you will probably have to right click on winflash and run as administrator. If that doesn't work then let me know.

If you successfully update the BIOS and the processor does not work after that then I will try to find where you need to go to have someone manually add the processor to the list of supported processors it can be done even if that bios doesn't support the CPU.

Good luck.

I keep trying to open the "WinFlash" file, but nothing comes up. I even try to run it in vista compatitbility mode. I did run as admin.
