New Gaming Rig Advice

Thread Starter
Hey everyone!

Alright I'd value some input on my next project.
With that being said my budget is $1500. I don't need anything but the computer so the full budget goes into the build.
I'm going to be using the rig for mostly gaming, I don't use any editing software or anything like that. I do plan on doing some moderate to upper level overclocking but not until I get aftermarket cooling(which would be liquid base), which would probably be around the beginning of next year(since overclocking isn't necessary at the moment).

So just a quick summary on my plans:
  • $1500 Budget - Can be more but the closer the better
  • Gaming Focused
  • Do plan to do overclocking
  • Will be converting to a water cooling system within six months
  • Don't need Monitor, Keyboard, Mouse, or HDD/SSD
  • Aesthetics are very important, so color coordination is a must! I was going for White/Blue/Black but i'm open to other schemes:)
And I am willing to pay more for it!

So Current List of Parts:

Case:
Thermaltake Level 10 GT Snow edition

Motherboard:
ASRock Z87 Extreme6

CPU:
Intel Core i5-4670K Haswell 3.4GHz

RAM:
CORSAIR Dominator Platinum 8GB @ 2133Mhz WITH light bar add-ons

GPU:
GTX 780 (I was thinking EVGA or MSI but there are so many i'm not sure if it makes a difference so help=greatly appreciated here)

PSU:
CORSAIR HX Series HX850 850W (My concern with this is that I want to make sure it will have enough head room to power a CPU-GPU water cooling setup)
All help and opinions are welcome!
Thanks!thumbsupsmiley.png
One last thing!
What should I do with my old rig? I was thinking of re-using as much as i can and making a "small" form factor PC for LAN parties and such...suggestions would be great!

  1. Evga over msi always.
  2. Why haswell?
  3. Why level 10?
  4. That gpu is more than enough, even for sli 780s.

1. Ya that's what I thought
2. Because I see no reason not to and I'd like to get latest I can and while Haswell wasn't a giant leap from last generation if is enough to warrant me to get one instead of the old one
3. It is spacious enough for a liquid cooling system to be put in later and if I change my mind and go for air cooling it's big enough for that too. (Also I just like the look best case I could come up with for the Blue/White/Black Color Scheme)

Personally, I don't like haswell as it clocks bad, and I believe it still has the tim issue. Sandy has remained my favorite and it cheaper, but it's up to you.

What about the Corsair Air Carbide 540? White is not comfirmed yet, but it's a good possibility.

I like the case but it wouldn't be able to fit in my room with my current furniture i need that vertical height and slim width the squareness of it makes it a little too impractical for me :/ in an ideal world I'd be getting the 900D but it too overkill XD

If for gaming only, i think "Haswell" is too much. You can have z77 motherboards w/ 3570k or 3770k (Ivy) processors which you can overclock up to 5hgz w/ proper cooling. Invest more in GPU which you already did on your list. For casing Level 10 is nice.... thumb.gif

I think these setup will not drain all your $1,500. biggrin.gif

so so so many things...

haswell is more expensive nothing for gaming, you could get ivy parts for cheaper. for 90% of games its all your gcard that decides performance, provided you have a 4core intel that's sandy or newer. that said, haswell isn't a bad choice or anything, as you say its more current and may be slightly more future proof than z77. it probably adds around $100 to your build. that's not factoring in that you could get used ivy easily, that would probably save u closer to $200. all that money could go to more better other stuff you might want more than the slight boost from owning haswell.

like
bigger SSD, SSD raid
more/faster RAM
SLI setup
better gcard
cooling
extras (peripherals)
monitor(s)

ok and as far as cooling, pick up a $30 air cooler and you can do a mild overclock on that very safely. that is a performance gain you can actually notice, you don't have to wait for water to get it. @$1500 budget theres no reason not to include this and start learning your overclocking right away. if you wind up having a problem (which you shouldn't) you want it to be sooner than later so you can return stuff, etc.

basically I think you would get a lot more utility out of your budget if you take that haswell money and throw it at something cool you really want like a nice monitor, 2nd gcard, sick mouse, headset. this goes for everyone looking at haswell builds under $2000. again, theres nothing wrong with haswell, what some of the experienced members here are trying to say is that if your on a limited budget, you can build a computer that is BETTER at gaming if you go with ivy, off a given budget.

what I would do, get new ivy mobo with warranty/RMA, and pick up a used ivy cpu.
