4770k/z87 OC-Force or 3820/x79 Rampage IV - which would you buy

These rigs will cost about the same. Knowing what you do about haswell, which would you buy for multicard gaming and benching? 4 vs 8 threads. PCIE3x16...etc.

Pretty sure the OC-force does 16, 16, 16 for tri sli. my concern is that a 4770K will not OC well whereas the 3820 does very well even though it's "locked". Do you know if x79 will work with ivy-e when it comes out?

If it was 3930k and Rampage IV, then that for sure.

But 3820 vs 4770k, I'd pick the Haswell. Plus that Gigabyte OC Force look's beastly.
OP, is this a trick question?? I'm surprised anyone is looking at haswell with what we know now.

Hard to say. If the SB-E can do 4.8GHz+ it will be the better choice. 4770K dont clock all that well.

For me the dilemma (re tooshort) is simply that the new 1150 boards look ... Well much better than the cpu crop they'll hold. Poor 4770k ocing (any delidded experience yet?) and i know of 2 3820s running clean at >4.8 which seems to be a ceiling for the 4770k, just clouds the issue.

Trick, no. Stoopid, maybe.

The consensus is growing tho...

Not sure if you realized this but a 3820 will run toe to toe with hexacores. In the links above I was severely radiator limited and I didn't have enough juice to feed the rig so that was as high as I could go. I've since upgraded the weaknesses and the gpus are clocked a lot higher. I would guess that if I ran that exact same setup now with my current cooling and psu setup, it would match my 3930K max within a frame or two. Below within the link is a thread where I isolated the 3820 and 3930, and tested their IPC differences. There wasn't much difference at all.

Trick, no. Stoopid, maybe.

The consensus is growing tho...

Get a i7 3930k and call it a day. You will not regret it.

But if you want to stay with Dual cards. I don't even see haswell being an improvement over your i7 2700k.

He used the knife method, I would love to delid with the vice method, seems so much simple.

Deliding a 4770K (Haswell). Improving temperatures and maximizing overclockablity

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
Stress testing was done by Prime95 64-bit version 27.9 on custom settings with FFT length set to 32 (Run FFTs in-Place checked). Duration: 10 minutes. CPU voltage and frequency were set to 1.312 volts and 4.3 GHz respectively.

Before delid:

Average CPU Load temperature: 87.5
Ambient: 24.9

Delta: 62.6

After delid (Cool Laboratory Liquid Pro between Die and IHS):

Average CPU Load temperature: 69
Ambient: 24.6

Delta: 44.4

As you can see, With a "simple" thermal grease swap, the temperatures droped by an average of 18.2 C while using 1.312 volts.

Waiting for Ivy Bridge-E now. let's see if the trend continues.
