Suitable ram disk size for gaming? Also, 1600mhz vs 2133mhz, is it worth it? - Page 2

I've been using SoftPerfect Ram Disk as of late and it's free. It seems to be one of the faster ones. I also like Primo RamDisk. It's not free but has some extra features like automatically saving to a HDD or SSD before shutting down and reloading at startup. Usually I would use steam mover and move the game over before starting the game and moving it back to my SSD when I was done playing. Also be aware if you lose power or BSOD, your game could be lost and you may have to download and install the game again.

You may not necessarily need DDR3-2133 if you are gaming, but a RAM disk is definitely great especially if you were considering another SSD. Your games can all run off the RAM disk and they will be lightning speed.

Max out the system with 32GB. DDR3 is only going to get more expensive from here on out, so you might as well get on it before price goes up and SSD is cheaper than RAM. You are correct about the speed difference between RAM disk and SSD; it is the best thing about maximizing RAM capacity esp for most that actually won't use more than 4-8GB for processing, but maximized RAM capacity since it has been so cheap for the past year or so..

Cheers

Many games see next to no improvement from running on a RAM drive vs an SSD, diminishing returns and all.

However, there are cases where one can be of great help; you'll have to do some experimenting.

I use soft perfect as well and compared to my sata 2 ssd it is noticeable In terms of loading. Especially games that load bits and parts if the map as you travel but ram disk for skyrim will be massive! I'm only using 4gb for my game.
I was looking at some ram last night and apparently AMD offers 32gb ram that are perfect for ram disk. Its on their site for a decent price.

i maxed out just to use a ram disk. currently only using 32 of my 64 gb for a ramdisk. so far i put tf2, skyrim, and the sims 3 on it, each with its own image file. ill probably make it 56gb since i dont do a lot of video editing/rendering anymore and do the occasional 3d modeling in sketchup or hammer sdk. i saw load times improve drastically. example video i uploaded of tf2 load time comparison if anyone is interested.

Here is a quick SSD vs RAMDisk I just did using a Samsung 840 Pro 256GB and G.Skill Trident X 2400Mhz memory.

In all seriousness though, I'd just get a SSD unless you plan on using the RAMDisk for photo / video editing.

think about Ram cache will still faster then any SSD and have plenty of space on the HD for games
