Samsung 216BW flickering; out of warranty, looking to repair myself

I've always wanted a dual monitor setup, but I can't justify the cost. My brother had to get a new monitor because he wrecked his, so I've taken possession of that.

It used to work intermittently, but right now it's running fine. The issues that I've noticed are a slight hum when it receives power (I'm thinking capacitors, but what do I know) and a slight yellowish tint and general lack of brightness. I'm comparing this monitor to a different monitor, so that could be my issue, but it generally seems a lot darker than mine, and much, much yellower. Not sure if they're related to the monitor potentially being on its last legs or not.

Anyway, the point of this post is to try and pinpoint what might be wrong with the monitor. Occasionally it will lose the signal to the screen, it seems. Still powered on, but no picture. Turning it off then on fixes the issue. This, combined with the slight hum, makes me think that it's something capacitor-related. The lack of brightness makes me think backlight-related. The monitor is far out of warranty, so potentially fixing it up myself would be a great intro to working with monitors and ideally a low-cost solution to getting a second monitor.

As always, any and all help is greatly appreciated.

If you hav´nt already, I´d suggest having a look at Fir3Chi3f's tutorial, nice easy guide to DIY.

Thanks for the link! I'll have to give it a good look when I've got the time.

More info on symptoms: the monitor has started cutting out more. Whenever I turn it off for the night, or even a few hours, when I turn it back on it flickers until the screen goes black. Then I turn it off and on and it might flicker again, but then the screen pops up flicker-free. Then it will cut to black a couple more times, causing me to turn it off then on, until it stays on for good. Other than that, it functions.

Does this sound like a capacitor issue to everyone?

Sounds like caps to me , I had similar symptoms , that´s why I suggested that guide, it gave me the confidence to repair mine. .
Just pop the back cover off and you should be able to identify the culprits.

Wonderful, thanks for the confidence booster (both the guide and your shared situation). I'll have to look into it sometime this week, hopefully. Guess I get to learn how to solder.

You´ll be fine, the first time for anything is daunting , I had to do mine a couple of times . 1st for the inverter board caps , and six months later for the psu board caps. lol. I can strip it now in about 10 min.
Just be gentle and get a nice fine tip for the soldering iron , and remember the polarity direction of the caps (the white stripe)when you take them out.
