Finally upgrading...is 770 right for me?

Hi all,

I finally got the chance to upgrade my ancient HD5850 to something new. I'm leaning towards the GTX 770 since it's essentially an updated 680 for a bit over $400+tax (btw, prices are in CAD$)

I mainly play FPS at 1440p. Not really sure if AA is really needed at that resolution, since I sit nearly 2ft away from the monitor, but I'm open to suggestions. Would this be a worthy upgrade for my system? Or should I wait for the 4GB variants or save a bit more for a 780?

Thanks in advance =)

the 770 is an amazing card, my brother owns it and it was an amazing upgrade from his GTX 480. however... if you dont wanna have a 256-bit memory interface, 2GB ram and just literally want higher of everything i would suggest you save up for the 780. i own a 780 and the performance i get from this card is just insane.

here is the thing... if you are able to wait alittle bit longer and then grab the 780 instead of the 770 I would say do it. good luck with your future purchase.

I agree with your logic.

Why not wait a bit, AMD's possibly showing off their new cards at E3.

The 770 should be more than good enough for your single 1440p monitor, the 780 you would be more "future proof" & it would allow for higher FPS with more AA turned up. But price/performance the 770 imo is the better way to go

I would, but as it stands, it takes forever for Canadian retailers to get parts in. Most of the 770s are still back-ordered since launch which means I have to wait at least 2-4 weeks before i get it =S and with the impending sales tax hike, it would be nice to get it sooner than later (canada...the only country where you can hike tax rates and no one protests...)

That's what I'm thinking too. I'm the type who doesn't upgrade frequently either (hence the 5850 and the old i7 920 haha) which is why I'm also considering waiting for 4GB variants (hopefully they come out soon...but I'm not even sure if it'll make an impact at all unless I play heavily modded games?) or the 780.

+rep all around. thanks guys/gals =)

at 1440p the HD 7970 is the better option than GTX 770. the extra VRAM and bandwidth are useful at that resolution. Sapphire HD 7970 OC(1 Ghz) for CAD 420 is a good option.

I'll actually address your statements in reverse order.

You should take a look at this thread regarding the performance differences between the 2GB and 4GB VRAM models. (LINK)

You don't necessarily need to get a 770. If you are comfortable with flashing a bios or 2, you could technically just get a 680, and overclock/introduce GPU Boost 2.0 performance scaling. (LINK)

A 7970 would also be a good option, especially for the price/performance ratio, especially if you can get one for less than a 770.

@evilminist

I share your pain. I called Canada computers and I went to Tigerdirect on the launch of the 780. Tiger didnt even know what I was talking about and CC acknowledge that they are getting them but it would be at least a week, if not more. Just order online. I got my EVGA OC 780 on newegg.ca. It's your safest bet. Taxes aren't that bad. 13% isnt that high compared to other countries around the world.
