[PCG] AMD say “PC ports of next-generation console titles are likely to struggle” on Intel IGP - Page 24

I know I just think it could be so good and a real game changer bringing hd7850 perf or even 7750 perf to the mainstream would boost pc gaming greatly.
Yea, most people who will actually read this article already new that.

according to that article, we'd be looking a desktop variant sporting only 4 cores, the move back to DDR3, and the lack of any Sony proprietary features.

Sounds more like a slightly improved version of AMD's current APU offerings then, rather than any sort of game-changing move. Gone is the memory bandwidth, extra processing power, and (this is just a prediction) there is no way AMD could cram a 7850-level card into an APU.

Not for another few years, anyway.

They are gonna cram a slightly gimped version of the equivalent of a HD7850 in it.
They are not gonna put the card in they are gonna incorp the die but I guess that was just a slip of the tongue right?

And what are your sources for this? The hardware in the PS4 isn't even an APU, so unless you have some architectural diagrams from AMD as well as fully detailed specs and scheduled release dates, I'm calling BS.

Yes, slip of the tongue. I meant that they weren't going to be able to cram the performance of a 7850-level card into an APU. Not only is the 7850 better than the best current iGPU (the Iris Pro 5200) by a factor of almost 2x, but it's also 130W by itself and not even close to old enough to account for that large an increase in efficiency. It is not going to happen for at least a few years.

Just to reiterate the point, the PS4 is not an APU. It is a SoC (system on chip) which is, essentially, much closer to a motherboard than an APU.

The PS4 is an APU with the FCH on-die.

SoC sounds like such a fancy thing... rolleyes.gif

How do we know it's a HD7850? Because the PS4 uses that exact same GPU.

lol it's Intel integrated graphics, duh. stating the obvious much?
We all know Intel can't make a GPU even if their bottom line depends on it rolleyes.gif
Even if they can, their drivers would send it to BSOD

It's still not a true APU, though. I have no doubt AMD could cram something like that together, but I don't see it happening for the PC market. I'll believe it when I see the benchmarks.

Reports are already showing the distant PC version of the PS4's hardware will be cut to 4 cores, with no mention of the GPU.

Call me a cynic, but I would expect maybe 6850-level performance out of it, but nowhere near 7850. The TDP on that chip would be massive.

Despite the fact that Intel currently has the fastest iGPU out there, yeah.

ok ok SoC...
besides it only uses like 90W and even less if clocked low 700Mhz would get it down to 70W I guess maybe even less when put into place correctly like asus did with their GTX650-E
It has to have the GDDR5 or equivalent to work so there might be an issue there but we'll see soon enough right tongue.gif
