Really appreciate your help guys, and I'm sure you can understand my frustration. Know a good bit about desktops, but I'm obviously more in the dark with laptop hardware, specifically Macs (if they were easier/more convenient to build, I would know more!)

Assuming my sample size of Macbook faultiness is too small. My one friend had his Macbook replaced three times (not from his own fault) because they just kept dying on him. My other friend's Macbook randomly died in the middle of a huge paper for school and the process he had to go through to get it replaced was ridiculously painful. Have a few more similar stories... A few of my friends that bought Lenovos, HPs, etc. (non-Apple) prior to school used theirs for 4+ years without any problems. Mac uses? Several replacements in under 4 years. Again, small sample size.

I guess the next step is waiting to hear back from my friend to see what he is told by Apple. Hopefully whatever is wrong is as cheap as possible. But I have a bad feeling that they sent it out and when it returns, it will already be fixed and they slap him with a huge bill. Again, don't know how Apple works, just assuming the worst from previous experiences.

S-x's idea of buying a HDD and installing OSX is a pretty good idea that I hadn't thought of. If just the HDD is shot, why pay $700+ when all I need to replace is the HDD.

Will update you guys when I know more. Hopefully you don't hear from me again in this thread, haha.
