I'm not sure about earlier generations, but for the 2012 50-series, there was really very little difference between the UT, ST, GT and VT sets. They all used the same panel. The main differences were things like the number of HDMI ports, 48vs96Hz for 24p Blu Ray, calibration menus and the louvre filter. The 48/96Hz thing is obviously not an issue if you're using the TV as a monitor at 60Hz (and both 96Hz and 48Hz modes exhibited the "50Hz bug" anyway), the pro calibration settings could still be accessed via the service menus on the lower models (I think the Euro UT sets even had white balance etc. in the menu), and the merits of the louvre filter are debatable. The filter is great in a bright room, but if you're viewing viewing in a curtained room, some would argue that the filter does more harm than good. I chose the 50" UT50 over the 42" ST50 for this reason.
I might add that they don't even make the high end models in Japan any more (not that it really made any difference - my V20 was made in Japan, and those 'high end' units still had QC issues like the cracking, buzzing transformer).Edited by Oubadah - 6/9/13 at 5:24am
