Need help figuring out internet problem/suggestions for better router/modem

I'll try to make this as short as possible. We have comcast cable, which I've personally seen speeds of 2.5-2.7 MB/s download on average, and 550-600 KB/s upload on average using a wireless adapter about 20ft away.

Now, the problem comes with our internet in general. We purchased a D-Link DGL-4500 router about 1 year and 10 months ago to replace one that wasn't working anymore, and occasionally the internet would drop maybe once a day to once a week, varying on and off. That seemed normal, or so I thought/think, but ever since about 3 weeks ago, the internet has been cutting out as much as 20 times per day. This makes it very difficult to try and play any games, download any files, watch videos on youtube, or simply try to Instant Message.

The correlation with this is that about 3 weeks ago, my brother got a Samsung Galaxy S4 (his first smartphone with a data plan to connect to Wi-Fi), and a few days later the internet started cutting out a couple of times a day. I thought maybe the service was just bad for a day or two, but it continued. Shortly after, my entire family all got their first smartphones with data plans. Over the past week, the internet has been completely trashed. I do not know if it's due to all of the devices on Wi-Fi, cables in the ground going bad, or something is wrong with our router, OR possibly a combination. This is where I need your guys' help.

On any given day, there are 8-10 devices (99% of the time) connected to the internet, with a maximum of 13 devices (~1% of the time). I'm not sure if this is just way too much for the router to handle, way too much for the internet to handle (so it'll just cut out instead of trying to provide service), or what. Help would be appreciated.

have you tried resetting the router to factory settings?

Do you mind posting a picture of the router's control panel? Try to see if there a page for all the wireless devices connected to the router. There, you can see signal problems and data usage.

It's hooked up to my brothers computer (it really shouldn't be), so I have no access/control over that. I'll have to talk to him about it or go onto his computer when he's not home one day. The most technically sound person in the house has 0 control over the network, brilliant.

Okay.

Try something like this.

Go to commandp prompt with admin mode and type in "ipconfig"

And then go to where it says Default Gateway.

There should be an ip address. Enter the IP address into your browser.

When asked to login, put the user name as "admin" and leave the password field blank.

See if you can get in.
