[Build Log] Tragbar build - aka: 'Airplane carry-on Haswell-Titan Z87E-ITX'

Name: Tragbar

The reasoning:
I travel for work, a lot, and have to frequently take flights across the USA. I am on these trips for 3-5 weeks at a time and usually am only home for 2-5 days max.

I have a laptop, used mainly for work now..... has enough power to do l4d2 on low low low.....also multiplayer games and hotel internet do not mix......

So the build idea. This has been formulating over the course of a few months. To build a full desktop pc including all necessary peripherals that is able to fit inside the size and weight restrictions of most airplanes carry-on restrictions.

Can I do it? Will it be powerful enough? How fast will upgradeitis onset? Will it make my morning tea? Is it even particularly hard to do?
--Thats about as good of a sales pitch I can make--

Some considerations I have already made, and my thought process for a few choices.

From the get go, I do not care about the 'looks' of the build. It can get dented all up for all I care, as long as the equipment works.

I plan on securing the graphics card against the top and bottom of the case so as to make it more sturdy.

All cables, especially sata data and power cables, will have a tiny dab of some adhesive to insure they do not vibrate out of their connectors during transport. But small enough so with enough force I can upgrade/remove parts.

Transporting a monitor is too hard. It would have to go into a checked bag, and I have no confidence in its well being there. So instead I have made a concession to go down to 720p and go with a small-ish projector instead. It will be run in either 3d mode or 120hz 2d mode.

When picking the projector I needed a bulb-less design as the vibration of planes/transportation would kill the filaments. Not to mention their limited hours of use. So an LED projector is desirable. Smaller and lighter the better.

I am a bit of an audiophile, so my dedicated headphone rig will be going along to act as the sound system. It is already very rugged and has survived many many trips. I possibly want to look into building these into the SQ08 if I have to, to save space..... or maybe store one inside the case for transportation purposes.

I have at this point purchased most parts and are awaiting me at home (whenever I do get to go home).

Computer Solution:
Silverstone SG08B +inc 600W PS
Silverstone 12.7mm slot load bluray burner

Intel i7-4770K
Noctua NH-L12 CPU Cooler
Asus ROG Impact (not yet purchased)
ASRock Z87E-ITX
EVGA GeForce GTX Titan

Samsung 840 Pro 512GB SSD

Audio Solution:
Schiit Asgard 2 Headphone Amplifier
Schiit Bifrost Headphone DAC
AKG Q701 Headphones

Video Solution:
LG PA75U slim LED projector (720p @ 120hz)

Case/Transport Solution:
Pelican 1510 Case

Here are my estimations for size / fitting into the pelican case.
Code:
Case 8.75" (w) x 7.5" (h) x 13.8" (d)
Projector 9.05" x 6.69" x 1.73"
Schiit amp 9 x 6 x 2.25
Schiit dac 9 x 6.75 x 2.25”
--------------------------------------------
Max Dimensions: 9.05 x 7.5 x 20.03" (Stacked on top of each other)

Air Tran
45" [length + width + height]
14 x 9 x 22"

US Airways
16" x 10" x 24"
40 lbs

Pelican Case
outside: 22.00" x 13.81" x 9.00"
inside: 19.75" x 11.00" x 7.60"

So basically, it wont fit all stacked up, maybe. I think I might have to place the projector along the skinny side of the computer case to make everything fit. (The wheels and handle of the case protrude into the case a bit). This is going to be something I have to figure out once I have everything.

The extra space will be taken up by power cables and interconnects and foam padding.

With the projector selected I have the option of doing WiDi instead of HDMI (weight saving), idk the resolution restrictions with this solution.....

Keyboard/mouse I am looking at either nano receivers or using the built in bluetooth. These might be able to fit in the case as well.....

Sorry for the amount of text, I don't have any photos as I am having everything shipped home and will post up progress as I make it....

Suggestions? Done something similar? Comments? Encouragement? Feel free.....biggrin.gif

Update 2013 06 11

All the parts are on their way to my home. And I have the rest of this week to work until I can return home. The anticipation is thick.

I decided to go with a Noctua NH-L12 cpu cooler, for the low profile design and good cooling ability + it will work well with the SG08's top fan.

Thanks for a link to that build. It gave me some idea.

I am going in a separate direction though. I want it to be much sturdier aka.... the sturdiness of the pelican case. And once I get to where I am staying, hotel room, job site, what have you. I will unpack and setup.

Should you ever want to use monitors, there are a few AOC monitors that can fit into long backpacks easily due to their shape and weight.
These monitors have removable base that allows the monitor without stand to be almost totally flat with no protrusion.
AOC 2051f - 1600x900 20" - I have taken this on a plane in a backpack before with only a bit of padding.
AOC 2251f - 1920x1080 22" - bigger version but I don't recommend it because there's a white glow, the display looked white-washed and has a bad viewing angle
AOC I2251FWE - 22" IPS monitor, it's new and I don't own this, but it's worth looking at.

This seems like its going to be a nice build!

This looks fun! I have the same idea on my build to take it overseas and the like. What cooling system will you be using? I think I may have a challenge transporting my SG05 as a carry on with the fluid in tact. Won't be a problem for you if you're on air though.
