7970 Video ram thermal pads conductivity.....

does anybody have an idea about the thermal conductivity of the stock thermal pads used for the reference 7970 ?

or does any body know about the minimum thermal conductivity that i would wanna use on my 7970 ?

the sole reason of this question is the scarcity of thermal pads here and the low chance of finding high conductivity thermal pads or thermal tapes on the market.....

as of now i'm just using MX-4 to fill the gap between the video ram IC chips and the reference heat sink since march and i have NOT ran into problems yet but i'm afraid this might be causing my video ram chips to over heat i can't tell for sure as there is no sensor that measures the video ram temps on the 7970....

i use fuji poly for my 7970 'cause i read good things about it here in ati forum. i know you are not from the US but maybe you can get one as close to its spec, which is 6 W/mK. here . . .

i suggest you apply a small amount of MX-4 on the vrams first before applying the pad. i use MX-2.

why put thermal paste on the thermal pads ?

as of now i'm using thermal paste only on the video ram of that gpu and i feel afraid that i maybe slowly killing it...

you really don't have any temp sensors for that?! I'm still behind in the times I guess... was figuring all cards above 77xx had the basic sensors... how does the card keep itself from overheating those chips? most have automatic shut-off to avoid thermal damage.

it got sensors for the Core and the Voltage regulator modules , but not the ram, not that i know of.....

mx-4 is bridging an 0.5 mm gap between the ram chips and the heat sink as of now....

Thermal conductivity of MX-4 should rival or exceed the stock pads, so if contact is good, temps are probably acceptable.

The issue with using a paste where a pad is normally used is that the gap is so large that even if the paste is thick enough for good initial contact, it can be pumped out, or harden and crack, over time.

No card I'm aware of has a VRAM temp sensor, nor do they particularly need them.

Except in the case of completely uncooled memory it's hard to conceive of a situation where the VRAM would be hotter than the core on a reference cooler, and most GDDR5 is rated for 85C+.

i am applying the technique i picked up when i first used a waterblock on my 7950 (EK). the procedure included applying paste on the vram. MX-2 is easy to clean not sure about MX-4, though. my guess is it helps transfer heat from the vram chip to the pad. you just need a very small amount on each - a dot right on the middle.

can i attempt touching the back of the pcb where video ram chips are located and try to judge by that if they are too hot ?

mx-4 is pretty thick and it's making contact but majority of people told me that it's not good to use mx-4 where a gap is in place...
