Problem after cleaning dust

Thread Starter
Hey all,

Since i removed alot of dust from inside my case, when i enter games my gpu temp rises to 100 degrees and the fans make a continuous loud noise over time.

My GPU is a Asus 6950 2gb, cpu i2500k. I idle at 65 degree's, which seems normal for these cards. Its weird tho, when i connected my computer, after cleaning, i was told my game drivers were out of date. They were up to date before the clean. =/

Anyone know why i'm having this problem with my gpu?

How did you clean the dust out of your case?
I would try re-applying thermal paste. Last time I did that when cleaning a friends old comp it knocked 20C off GPU load temp, and clean the heat sink really well when its off. Did you push dust into the fan? You did something if the noise of the fan changed..

I would do as Namkab suggested. Make sure to use rubbing alcohol and coffee filters to clean it off. Then apply a dot of AS5 thermal paste to the heatsink and apply a dot to the die. The dot on the die needs to be spread on with a credit card, make sure it's a thin layer that covers most of the surface. I've rebuilt many GPU's and that seems to be the best way I've found.

So, you only dusted the computer? Nothing was actually moved?

The only thing I could see happening is that you dislodged the fan cable, or that somehow it died or clogged up during the dusting.

If it didnt run at 100c before, moving air around isnt going to make that happen.. lol.

Or maybe you bumped the card and the old paste cracked or became loose? I really cant think of anything else...

i used cotton buds to clean around the fans.(only touched the fans with them). my gpu has two fans and it had quite a bit of dust on them. I'm ultra careful, can't afford to damage my components especially with a bub on its way.

The inside of my computer was doing a weird buzz noise before cleaning it, I thought it was a fan from either my gpu, cpu or my case clogged with a bit of dust.

Since getting rid of the dust, i've got the instant 100 degree temperature only when playing any game on launch. My GPU fans work overtime as the game launched and i simply have to shut the game down.

Funny enough the buzzing noise i once heard has gone lol .

My GPU right now at idle is at 49 degrees and my cpu sitting around 28-30. Im pretty sure my old GPU temps while in game were around 60-70.

I'd love to reapply some quality thermal paste but i'm just too nervous especially about touching my GPU. Whenever i start windows and try to launch a game it says my drivers are out of date. Before cleaning i had no problems with drivers and everything was up to date.

Can you physically see your fan spinning? Im sorry I know that seems stupid simple, but you said it was whining then stopped making noise, thought maybe it died and could of been overlooked. Update your drivers to just eliminate that part of the problem

clean the fans of the gpu and re-mount the heatsink with new thermal paste (i recommend Gelid Solutions GC-Extreme. its easy to apply, easy to clean and performs top notch). 65c at idle dosent look normal

there is not much you can do wrong.
1. unscrew the heatsink.
2. make sure you disconect the fan cable from the pcb.
3. clean the thermal paste of with toilet paper or a lint free cloth and isopropyl that you apply on the cloth/paper. (clean it of the chip and the heatsink)
4. reapply thermal paste. (if you use gelid solution gc extreme like i recommended, it even comes with a spreader)
5. screw it back together without applying to much pressure on each screw.
6. done. your card will be as good as new and you will enjoy much better temperatures
