HDD slowing down or what ?

Thread Starter
I have a problem with my HDD's as far as i know

the details are that i have 4 HDD's plugged to my computer and 1 SSD the problem is that when i play movies with KM player on 2 of the HDD's the movie always stops after a few minutes like the video gets stuck the audio keeps playing then the audio slows down and lets the video catch up with it .. but the other 2 HDD's are fine the videos i play are mostly 1080p or 720p
but my computer can probably handle it

first only 1 of the HDD's was like that in which i downloaded stuff directly so when that started to happen the video getting stuck n all i just changed the download directory to another HDD which is now acting the same can any one help me please ?

have like lots of data on these HDD"s and i don't want to loose them. they are pretty old HDD's I don't want to buy any more HDD's because last time i bought online they had some problems in the HDD's.

Down load and install Speed Fan have it do an online in depth test.

This will tell ya if it is a HDD problem or a program problem. thumb.gif

The fifth tab along SMART, is the one you want.

Select the HDD in question from the drop down menu. If you have multiple drives of the same model and size, turn off the computer and remove all bar one, test them individually.

After you have chosen a HDD, click on the bottom "Perform an in-depth online analysis of this hard disk"

Wait a few minutes, it should open a new tab / window in your default browser, this will give you a read out of different SMART values, at the bottom is summary of any problems etc.

The only time I have ever encountered a drive that didn't allow SMART values to be read was dropped portable drives, but they were still discovered.

You say they are older ones, how old roughly? You could try maybe restarting with only your C: drive and one at a time, but not sure if that will work or not.

But I would personally play on the side of caution and back everything up I can.

I want to backup but i don't have any spare HDD's laying around :/ and i think maybe the motherboard is faulty or something i am using a rampage IV extreme and it only runs 5 HDD's but has 8 ports don't know why that is maybe the motherboard is doing this

i did a quick test as u said and it says this

ERIOUS ISSUE : your hard disk has 379 reallocated sectors. Hard disks do have spare sectors (usually from 256 up to 2560) used to replace bad ones. This remapping operation is transparent to the end user. Anyway, this can lead to degraded performances (because remapped sectors are in different places of the disk than the original ones and the head needs additional moving). If reallocated sectors grow over time, you might encounter some serious troubles. A backup of the most important data is suggested anyway.

NOTE : your hard disk Power On Hours Count attribute current value (65) is below the normal range (90 - 100) reported for your specific hard disk model. Basically your hard disk was powered on for more than the maximum time the average user did. This means that either all of the reports collected are from hard disks that were not powered on for too long (this is realistic for recent models) or that your hard disk is becoming old. Usually this is not considered as a pre-failure advisory, but you should check whether you want to replace the hardware or keep an eye on its performances over time.

I think maybe its because i never turn of my computer even if i do i do a q uick restart and then it stays on for like months tongue.gif

To check the MB, disconnect all your HDDs except your C: drive, then boot into Windows, change ports and boot again, until all have been checked. If it fails you may have a problem then with the MB. Other wise it is a HDD fault.

That HDD report shown is not good, my experience is once you start getting bad sectors, you are better off backing up and replacing the drive. It usually ends with tears.

The hours powered on is just a guide, think about server farms etc, they stay on 24/7, with no to little off cycles.

If a new drive is out of the question, you could run the gauntlet and keep using it, but be prepared it may not end well. If sectors can not be remapped, the data is lost, which can and probably will make the file corrupt. On the other hand you could be lucky and just have a few bad sectors that get remapped and suffer some bad performance issues during video playback etc.

Trust me I understand where you are coming from, I recently had one of my 2Tb WD Greens fail on my HTPC, which I was forced to find the money to replace it.

I wish you all the best with your bidding. Oh and the WD Black are meant to be really reliable thumb.gif

I don't trust HDD's with capacity more than 1 TB because last time i bought a brand new 3TB green WD and as soon as i plugged it in some problem came and when i fixed that cyclic redundancy something error started to show so i just removed it and gave it to a friend to check for a few days if he can figure out any porblems
