Personally I cant wait to see what they are showing off tomorrow. Been hoping for the 8 series for some time now, as has everyone else. The cooler may be damn ugly but it looks much better than the usual stock cooler. However it is gonna vent heat into the case.

Regardless of what graphics card is inbound, I need a new processor and monitor before any GPU upgrade becomes viable.

I can assume that it is fake for a few reasons:

1) AMD has never used the same cooler design on 2 generations of cards.
2) If you look closely above the power connectors and in the vent, there are some fins which dont have a fan over them to cool or even a open space to dissipate heat.
3) looking at the location of the heatpipes, why would AMD put a GPU right at the back of the PCB? and even if it was at the middle, why are the heatpipes sticking all the way down to the back? and its inefficient to have the heatpipes reach the second heatsink from so far away(left) they could have gone with this type of design:

4) just under the first fan there is s small VRM heatsink, which is exactly at the same place the 7990 has it at, if that is the VRM, what is at the front? BTW its is a really stupid place to put the VRMs since that is where the memory would be at, in the case of the 7990, there is very litle space on either side of the PCB to place the VRMS so they went with it on top of the card.

"8970"

7990:

just my few observations.

They should do a reference cooler like on that Asus 770 from ROG series, hybrid air/water cooler where you can run it on air, if you so desire, but there are also G 1/4 connectors and you can put some water thru it if you so desire, in which case you can switch fans off. Or for little added performance run the fans AND water at the same time. I'd imagine that with proper mass production it would make the card perhaps 20$ more expencive at worst.

which when they make lets say 100,000 of them, they would lose about 2 million in profit just for that 0.0002% of the consumers.

I think its fair to assume that far larger percentage than just 0.0002% are running some kind of watercooling setups who buy the high end cards. Obviously this kind of cooler would not make sense at x770 and below series cards, but for 8850, 8870, 8950 and 8970 series I think it might be sensible, or at least 8950 and 8970 cards. You can get pretty decent water cooling kit for as low as ~130 eur and all your would need in that case would be 2 fittings (and a little extra tubing) for your card to drop the temps significantly lower. Many of the new watercooling kits come already with proper fittings and expandability, even some of the higher end "all-in-ones" come like that.

They've used similar ones, the one used on the HD38*0s and HD48*0s were similar if I remember correctly, in fact I believe the only difference from the HD3870x2 to the HD4870x2 is that one of the heatsinks on the HD4870x2 is copper assuming memory serves.
