1080 external build - Colour tubing/fittings, pump power, fillport, drainport?

Hi all,

Replacing my 4 year old AMD machine with some new shiny things. Going to custom watercool + best possible 24/7 overclock for the first time aswell.
I have some small questions (at the end of this post), help would be greatly appreciated!

Some info about the build:
I decided on an external 1080 radiator build and want to make this thing really silent and automatically controlled. So basically everything has to be PWM (fans/pump).
This machine is build for gaming. Currently 24" 1920 * 1200, but in the future probably 27" 2560 *1440. The plan is to stay relevant for something line 3 - 4 years at least.

The hardware that needs cooling:
CPU: Intel Core i5 4670K Boxed - Gaming only, so no hyperthreading cpu needed.
Motherboard: Asus Z87-Deluxe
GPU: Crossfire 2x HIS 7950 IceQ X² Boost Clock 3GB
Case: Fractal Design Define R4 Pearl Black - Window (For this one i was contemplating the titanium colour, but it is hard to get in my country.)
Memory: Corsair Vengeance CMZ8GX3M2A2400C10
PSU: Corsair AX860
SSD: Samsung 840 series Pro 256GB

Internal colours are basically gold & black (motherboard) and copper / silver for the waterblocks. Hope this looks good.

Watercooling parts:
Radiator: Phobya Xtreme NOVA 1080 - With stand, and 4x180mm fan frame
Fans: Phobya G-Silent 18 PWM 900rpm Slim black 4 Bundle
CPU-block: Koolance CPU-380I
GPU-block: Watercool HEATKILLER® GPU-X³ 79X0 - with backplates and single case slots
GPU-bridge: Watercool GPU-X Dual-Link
Pump: Swiftech MCP35X Pump
Reservoir: Swiftech MCP35X Reservoir Rev.2b
Coolant: Distilled water + Mayhems XT-1
Tubing: PrimoChill PrimoFlex Advanced LRT 16/10 mm

The basic build as I see it:

Probably going for 2 quick disconnects so the external radiator is detachable. The fan cable also needs some way to disconnect.

I have some questions regarding this build:
  1. Any suggestions for colour of the tubing and fittings? What would look nice with the gold / black / copper / silver theme?
  2. Best place for the fill port? The Phobya stand has a hole in the top for fillport purposes, but it doesn't line up with the radiator ports, and flipping the radiator upside down would cost extra tubing. Maybe somewhere above the resevoir? And which kind of connectors?
  3. Drainport suggestions? Maybe some sort of t-line after the pump?
  4. This pump has pwm, but does it have enough pump power?
  5. What kind of things do i need to do this: http://img594.imageshack.us/img594/10/35xdownspout.jpg like Martin did?

Any other comments on colour scheme, waterblocks choices, etc. are greatly appreciated!

1) Im not sure what colour tubing you should get but for fittings you could get the matte black bitspower fittings, they look real nice

2) Just get the fill port as high as possible and in the most convenient place so somewhere above the res might be good. For this you could probably use a t-fitting and then have it going off to a bitspower fillport fitting (this: http://www.frozencpu.com/products/10364/ex-tub-608/Bitspower_G14_Female_Female_Pass-Through_Fitting_-_Fillport_-_Matte_Black_BP-MBWP-C04.html#blank)

3) Drain port is the opposite to the fill port so wants to be at the lowest point in the loop and yeah a t-line would be good with something like this http://www.frozencpu.com/products/14596/ex-tub-1035/Bitspower_G14_Mini_Valve_-_Matte_Black_BP-MVV-MBK.html?tl=g30c101s460.

4) It should be enough to power this loop, if you do have genuine concerns about and money is no issue then you could go for this: http://www.swiftech.com/mcp35x2pump.aspx which is 2 of those pumps

5) You would need this to do it: http://www.frozencpu.com/products/12104/ex-res-245/Swiftech_MCP35X_Optional_Tank_Reservoir_Attachment_-_Rev_2b_MCP35X-RES.html?tl=c107s156b33

Hoped this helps smile.gif

hey, my build also uses an external rad with quick disconnects, fill and bleed ports and stuff smile.gif buildlog with pictures in my sig

like jd2195 already posted ; fillport on top and bleed port on the lowest point. I used the Bitspower fillports as well for both. Connected my reservoir directly to the fillport with an extender, so it hangs freely. Put a T-section in the bottom of the rig, with the bleed port connected to it. If I put a bucket under it, open the top port then the bleed port, it drains within half a minute smile.gif

I also used those Bitspower fillports as pass-throughs at the back of the case, with Koolance QDCs connected to them. I got 4 male and 4 female QDCs, so I can leave out the external radiator and still have the loop connected by putting one of the two radiator hoses between the pass-throughs (easy when bleeding/leak testing/draining)

The MCP35X is very powerful, it should have no issues with this loop

Thanks for the help so far.

I have received the hardware yesterday and built the thing without the watercool parts:

I'm running the case fans from motherboard headers. The 2 fans seem enough for the watercooled build.
Im planning on putting the pump and 4 fans on the radiator on the CPU and CPU_OPT fan headers from the motherboard.

I wonder where to place the pump with reservoir, though. I might have to remove the bottom drivecage to make room? Or I could do something like n0n44m's monolith build.
Looks don't matter much, because I went with the no window case. I'm more concerned with silence smile.gif

That reservoir and pump combination is only available from Swiftech akaik. I've rigged up something similar with a male-male adapter:

http://www.frozencpu.com/products/15174/ex-tub-1166/Alphacool_G14_Male_to_Male_Extender_-_4mm_-_Deep_Black.html?tl=g30c101s744

Allows me to use any reservoir I want and it "looks like it belongs there".

The reviews on that integrated reservoir are less-than-stellar, too. Some reviews last year claimed the cracking problem was fixed but the most recent reviews state otherwise.

EK-WB has a similar unit up for sale:

http://www.frozencpu.com/products/17537/ex-pmp-213/EK_DDC_X-RES_Top_140_-_Acetal_CSQ_-Laing_DDC_Swiftech_MCP350355_EK-DDC_X-RES_140_CSQ_-_Acetal.html?tl=g30c107s1806

I haven't read any reviews on the reservoir but I can say the EK-WB Acetal top looks and performs great.

That combo does look very attractive.

I'm going for a PWM pump, so I probably have to stay with the MCP35X or the MCP655-PWM.

I have 4 cm room from the panel to the graphicscards, so that is more then enough space for tubing, which im probably going to lead through the 90degree PCI port on the back of the case to the external radiator.

I only have a few options for the pump + reservoir because:
  1. From the floor to the bottom vga card its about 11,5 cm, probably a little bit more when the HIS cooler is replaced with the waterblock, so not enough for pump + res if i keep the bottom drivecage, Enough room for a pump though.
  2. I cannot mount a pump on top of the bottom drivecage since there are no attachment points.

So that leaves me with:
  1. Removing the bottom and middle drivecage is an option that would make enough room for a pump + res combo. It would leave me with 2 5inch drivebays for possible future disk drives.
  2. Keep both drive cages, put pump between PSU and bottom drive cage, use either bay reservoir or
  3. hang a reservoir from the ceiling with a fillport in the ceiling?

I don't know which one to pick of these 3 options.

I'm also going to revise the radiator plan a bit too I think. I'm looking now more at the MO-RA 3 instead of the Phobya 1080. The Mora comes as a more complete package, and also has better looking accesoires. Especially the fan guards + stainless steel one looks incredible.

I also need a way to power the fans on the external radiator. I was going for PWM fans and put them on the mobo OPTCPU headers, but i have no idea how many PWM fans i can put on 1 channel
