Stagnation in the gaming industry

Thread Starter
Anyone else feel like the gaming industry is in a state of stagnation, if not outright devolution (as in, game quality is actually less than it used to be)?

Take, for example, Battlefield 3. Although technically more sophisticated, the gameplay is (IMO) substantially stripped-down and markedly worse than Battlefield 2. We all know this is supposed to be EA's way to attempting to appeal to a wider audience (why does mass appeal have to mean junk anyway?) .... however, that doesn't change the reality of the game itself compared to BF 2.

Valve hasn't produced a sequel to HL2, and haven't made anything particularly interesting recently.

Crysis 2 was worse (IMO) than Crysis 1, and Crysis 3 came out on the same engine as 2 and wasn't too great.

It seems like most games these days are actually less innovative, less interesting, more "corporate-hollow" than original and creative.

I built a new machine last summer with great hardware... and I've yet to buy a game that is really great, amazing, or in any way reminiscent of the gameplay experiences I would get basically anytime prior to 5 or so years ago (back then we had Crysis, HL2, BF2, etc. etc.)

Even Skyrim was just a better version of Oblivion on the same engine.

I realize next-gen consoles are coming out soon so hopefully we'll see some truly new material... however, I can't remember a time prior to this since I've started gaming where there have been so few truly good titles (for my definition of good).

Anyone else feel this way? And it's not just because I'm older, when you consider the fact that games from 5+ years ago were more intellectually interesting than what we get today.

Hi, and welcome to OCN smile.gif

I actually think most games are getting better!
The latest Tomb Raider is the best so far, and the same goes for the latest FarCry, Bioshock, Metro games IMO.
But yeah some games are getting worse, I do agree redface.gif

Thanks. Well it's good to see someone enjoying the current releases. I guess I feel like most games I've been playing are stripped down derivatives of previous games (Crysis 1 on an island, Crysis 2 a corridor shooter, BF 2 to 3, etc.)
Skyrim is hardly a "better version of Oblivion on the same engine". The engine has been reworked so much that it might as well be new. CryEngine 2, one of the most revolutionary game engines of all time, wasn't made from scratch. I don't think everyone's beloved Frostbite 2 (which is ridiculously overrated) was made from scratch either. Oblivion had more quest/story focus, while Skyrim put all of the emphasis into open world exploration and gameplay mechanics.

But to answer the main question about games being worse/less innovative/less intellectually interesting, overall it seems that way. Innovation is harder to come by no doubt, lots of games are trying to copy others. Call of Duty is the best example, CoD 4 changed gaming and lots of games are just trying to copy it.

Bioshock and Tomb Raider were also mentioned. Bioshock has pretty much the same, ancient, uninspired corridor shooter gameplay but at least they wrapped it up in a decent story. Compared to Half Life 2, Bioshock just seems inferior gameplay-wise. HL2 brought more exploration, puzzle based gameplay, and platforming, in addition to shooting mechanics. So Bioshock is not an impressive modern release, it fails to demonstrate evolution in game design.

From what I gather, Tomb Raider is a lot like Uncharted which is one of the most popular single-player adventure series today. Looking back at what was popular back in the late 90s or early 00s, Zelda stands out the most. Zelda is much more open and has a lot more gameplay variety, while Uncharted forces you down the same path every time, with invisible walls everywhere to keep you from straying. Gameplay is a lot more dull in Uncharted, so I see no evolution here, aside from cinematic cutscenes.

Right now, the most popular games are CoD/Battlefield and all of the similar clones. These are oversimplified, casual, mindless generic shooters. In the late 90s and early 00s, the most popular games were adventure games like Zelda, and RPGs like Baldur's Gate. These are story driven games that emphasize exploration, and have well thought out gameplay variety.

This says a lot, and like you said, that right there is devolution. The problem is most people don't want "good" games anymore. Everyone throws their cash at the same mindless rehashes, so mindless rehashes is what we will get. Still, most of my favorite games came out in the last 6 years. Some of these games actually do show the evolution in game design that should have happened.

I agree all the games you listed are good examples of great games. I think the OP however has a point in regard to big series games just not delivering. Skyrim obv was an embarrassment for the TES series. Hitman pulled a Splinter Cell Conviction(albeit they did a little better) and isolated a large amount of long time fans.

It seems the sleeper titles are where it is at. Anything well known seems to have been homogenized to fit the corporate model and the casual gamer.

@BoredGunner: What about ARMA3? I do agree with you however....spend plenty of hours playing BF3 but it is lacking.

Blood Dragon is a good example of gaming devs "doing it right". Dark releasing soon is another good example of how indie companies may save gaming.

MMO gaming is stale unfortunately. Everyone thought GW2 would set a trend but GW2 didn't impact the MMO world like the hype said it should. The MMO's coming out in the coming months show promise of amazing games but it wont be revolutionary.

Changes won't happen because the next gen consoles are coming out. Its going to be a long time until we see game breaking changes.

Graphics mean nothing, quality of gameplay does. Game developers are very comfortable right now, they need more competition.

I know i only mentioned the MMO state of gaming but i know every area is in a similar state of mind.

I absolutely agree that there is dire stagnation in the industry. Even regression. Especially on the technological front.

Meh MMO's are like multiple games rolled together that way they grab multiple demographics of players as opposed to just one....at least when executed correctly they do.
For instance World of Warcraft R1 PvPers and PvE End Game Hardcores don't mix. They are essentially playing vastly different games. So you have people that would never be caught dead in a raid paying Blizzard 15 bucks a month to push for Gladiator and others who have no interest in player vs player gameplay dropping 15 bucks a month to farm the same content week after week in hopes of best in slot for every slot. Then there is the casual weekend adventurer noob or the guy who just like to troll chat....maybe a girl that collects battle pets. What a racket they got going on.

An MMO is stagnation optimized for profit and when you get hooked you most likely wont be playing anything else. The rest of the game companies are scrambling to figure out how to pander to the rest of the gamers not trapped in the endless maze that is MMO gaming or they are trying to make a WoW clone(foolish) or killer(even more foolish). Nothing new but WoW subscription numbers are not to be laughed at. Yet no matter how much I complain on how they have negative impacts on the evolution of gaming.....I will without a doubt buy TES:O.
