Stagnation in the gaming industry - Page 8

I agree with many of the points of gaming becoming a mainstream form of entertainment. Once that happened and corporations noticed studios making millions off their product, it was inevitable that franchises and concepts would be milked to death. It also is a matter that the concepts we know and love from our past have been recreated in some way by at least five different games since. It is difficult to recapture the feeling of exploring Hyrule for the tenth time (LttP), beating three other friends on N64, my first CAL win (CS 1.6), winning a light saber duel (JA) or finishing Guild Wars (Prophecies). I believe for many of us those experiences helped define our gaming childhood which is something I don't feel any studio can recreate. While many games have lost the creative feeling and gone the way of Hollywood movies, I think many of us have just gotten older. That isn't to say we don't appreciate and enjoy gaming but I think we just aren't able to recreate the experiences we have been craving because that isn't truly possible. I personally noticed myself becoming a "non-gamer" since the release of GW2. I played the original back in '05 and was waiting for the sequel since it was announced but despite enjoying the game, I stopped playing consistently after about two months. My character was level 35-40. I've been slowly playing off and on since. The game like most don't hold my attention or interest. I am also one that has 300+ Steam games with about 150+ from Humble Bundles but I have little desire to play them. I think achievements may have assisted in the lack of interest for some because that is one of the few reasons I will play a game or continue it. Anyway, that's my super long post. My main points are gaming has gone mainstream and corporations have turned them into formulaic Hollywood-style sequels. We want the experiences we value most back that can't be recreated because it is difficult to experience that new "wow" feeling when gaming has become formulaic and our personal lives/personalities may have changed as well.

They are

The big titles (not necessarily AAA but including AAA) want to copy the most successful model and make more money.

On the other hand (most) indie games want to pay tribute to older games and usually end up copying them with little actual innovation.
