Suggest game to play? - Page 2

Dude, sounds like you're saying you have the Stalker series ... but you keep trying to 'start' with CoP? That's the problem then. CoP is pretty great, but it's a TERRIBLE way to start out playing the series (imho).

You really need to start with SoC (I recommend using the Complete mod), and kinda 'force yourself' through the first hour or two ... it does start slow, and it's confusing, and the weapons suck. You also need to manually make LOTS of saves so you don't get stuck replaying large chunks of game all the time.

I *promise* you, based on your 'taste' in games (I've played pretty much every game on your list there) that if you stick with it and play the whole game, you'll end up loving it. The Fan Club thread is FULL of people who 'started it', found it too hard/confusing, then picked it up again later, finished it, and then went "DAMN I can't believe I waited that long to finally play the game! It was AWESOME"

Honestly, SoC gets REALLY cool after few hours of play, once you start learning the lay of the land, the nature of 'the Zone', how everything 'works' in the game (oh, and getting a scope slapped onto your AK makes a HUGE difference in the fun factor).

Then when you finish, you still have CS (pretty decent, def worth playing but not the caliber of the other two) and CoP (which is great, but it's just not the best one to play first).

I'll go so far as to say that the only SP FPS that competes with Stalker SoC as my all-time fave is Half-Life 2 (with FEAR and Prey in 3rd and 4th). Not to say that the 'story' is anywhere near as great as HL2, but the gameplay and atmosphere totally makes up for the difference, and puts them on roughly equal ground in my book.

I've played the WHOLE SoC campaign probably 15 times (far more than any other similar game) using various mods in about 10 of those playthroughs. I seriously might never completely stop playing that game as long as I live. Even though it's single-player, and doesn't really change that much (more than a lot of other games though) each playthrough ... I just never really get fully tired of going through that whole campaign, which I've done every 6 months or so at least, since it came out 7 years ago.

So ... that's my vote. Stalker SoC with Complete Mod. Make LOTS of saves (manual, not just quicksaves). Play it AT LEAST until you get to Lab X18. If you still aren't having a good time by the time you finish X18, you have my permission to 'give up' and say you don't like it wink.gif

I think it goes without saying that you should play every series in order. Especially Mass Effect; all three games really make one game, they might as well be expansions. Get all the DLC too, though you're bound to go broke lol. Thanks EA!

The same applies to S.T.A.L.K.E.R. though not as much. Why start with the 3rd game in a story driven series? You'd have no idea what the Zone is, or what the game is about. Start with SoC, which also happens to be most peoples' favorite. And use mods, they make the game 1000x better and more like how they were intended to be released. Use this for SoC, this for Clear Sky, and this for CoP when it comes out.

Story is on a whole different level. SoC's story is much greater than HL2's. HL2's is way more straightforward and simple, though both are vaguely similar in the sense that both are about scientific research going too far, and backfiring on us. However HL2's story pretty much stops there, while SoC has more themes going on and just has a much larger scope. HL2 is also a more linear game while SoC is free roam, so it's hard to compare the two as a whole. Both are some of the best in their respective genre.

I don't recommend Complete mod for SoC though, although it's much better than vanilla (less bugs, better graphics, some gameplay additions like free roam/item repairing/sleeping bag/can join factions), it makes the game much easier. The mod I linked to above looks MUCH better, has vastly improved sound effects, much improved AI, and adds the same gameplay features + much more, such as:

- Less restricted A-Life (everything goes out further to hunt if necessary, creatures more commonly travel to new levels, everything is no longer territorial so some things chase you further, more active world, more randomized spawns)
- Cut mutants (Chimera, Burers, Cat, Izlom, Zombies, Ghost Zombies, etc.)
- Vehicles
- Tons of new weapons and misc items (ranging from food to anomaly detectors, mine detectors, tracking devices)
- Ability to recruit companions
- Artifact merging
- Emissions
- More anomalies
- Emissions change the spawns of anomalies like they should
- Rebalanced to be much more realistic/hardcore (you die quicker but so does everything else)
- Aim sway re-enabled
- etc

Most of these features were actually planned for initial release, and they will help you get into the game. And just starting with the first game helps a lot too. tongue.gif

Alright man,

I can safely say I am also in the same boat!

I agree with the statement that there are more hours of Skyrim to be had, combat changes, graphical changes, more quests, dual sheathing and many more. I'm currently in the process of modding Skyrim with S.T.E.P. It takes a fair few hours but it will be totally worth it once completed.

Have you also tried Neverwinter? Although it isn't exactly a sandbox open world, it is still pretty vast. Feels a lot like the original Baldur's Gate games, has a lot of potential, however the combat gets a bit repetitive after a few hours, but you'll find yourself coming back to it occasionally for your Neverfix.

I know this isn't really a game you're after, but I find War Thunder a good addition to my collection, it is a free to play flight simulator, just ignore "Arcade Mode" or you'll commit suicide after 10 minutes of gameplay.

There are also a lot of Crysis (Original) mods that breathe new life into the game, none of that confined cover based shooter it has turned into. I'd recommend one called Escape: Paradise . I've had a lot of fun on that mod as you can approach the main objective anyway you like.

Also, if you haven't played DayZ or Arma II & III I highly recommend those games, look for RPG servers for DayZ, a much more co-op focussed gameplay, some servers even have full towns and cities made by players that are pretty engaging, there is still PvP, but you don't get "shot on sight" anymore. There are also some pretty decent Arma III servers, there aren't as many RP ones though.

Minecraft can be good with high resolution textures, but this isn't really something I am into at the moment, nor will I be for the foreseeable future, but it is definitely worth a shot if you're bored of "game mechanics" and just want to have your own little world, sculpted in the way you like.

I hope you find something that satisfies your needs, there's nothing worse than having a Mega-Atomic-Death-PC and not being able to satisfy your gaming requirements. If you're interested in playing any of the above, I'll be on Steam with the same name as OCN in about 2 hours, feel free to add me, or anyone else for that matter, anyone on OCN is welcome by me! thumb.gif

EDIT: Speaking of S.T.A.L.K.E.R apply for the Survarium Alpha Test if you haven't already, it looks sublime!

Ever played the Batman: Arkham ______ games? It's hard to categorize them exactly. It's divided, mainly into a third-person brawling action game, but also as a stealth game (occasionally, you enter a room filled with enemies armed with assault rifles and shotguns) I never really thought much of them until they came out, but then they got VERY good reviews. The first came almost the same year as Bad Company 2 and Modern Warfare 2, and I honestly thought it was better than both. Definitely not just a cash-grab with the Batman name; afterward, there were even other games basically copying the basics of its combat system.

I'll check out this Mod (right now, in fact wink.gif), but you think it's best for a FIRST playthrough? Cause that's what we're talking about here. Personally I think given the ease w/which Complete is downloaded and installed, along with the fact that it doesn't change gameplay very much ... it's a better option for the first-time player. Just me wink.gif

Regarding your other comment about Stalker v. HL2 ... we'll have to agree to disagree. As much as (you know) I adore Stalker series, and esp. SoC, I just cannot remotely agree with the idea of the 'story' being 'greater' in Stalker games overall than HL2 games overall. Obviously that's entirely subjective, but I just don't think Stalker is in the same ballpark in terms of 'greatness'.

To me Stalker series is 'great' because of the open world, the atmosphere of mystery, the pseudo-RPG elements, the awesome ballistics modeling, etc. Basically it's awesome gameplay and atmosphere, with a passably interesting storyline to drive the action.

HL2 + Episodes is a much more fully realized and engrossing 'story', with memorable characters and a world that I actually cared about ... Hell I friggin CRIED at the end of Episode 2. There's nothing in Stalker that ever 'moved' me, or made me 'care about' the characters and what happens to them, the way that HL2 did.

Despite my passionate love for the series, I just cannot go along with the idea Stalker has a 'greater story' than HL2, not even in the slightest. Hell, a lot of the Stalker story you'll miss unless you check your PDA all the time. In HL2, it's like you're LIVING the story.

Unless you mean something else by 'greater' apart from 'better' headscratch.gif

It's fine for a first playthrough, especially since he has trouble getting into unmodded CoP. That mod makes SoC closer to what it was intended to be, and doesn't change the story or anything.

Here's what I recommend:

Stalker - I didn't like it but my friends did and they loved it. Seems right up your alley.
Mass Effect Series- I haven't played ME3 yet, but the first two were AMAZING!!
Total War Series - I've like each one that I played....
Torchlight 1/2 - Both solid games
Dragon Age - Solid RPG
Assassins Creed - I don't recommend playing them all right in a row, they will get repetitious very fast but in between other games is great.
Starcraft 2
League of Legends

Playing these should keep you busy for like , six or seven days. smile.gif

It doesn't change the story, but I'm just hitting agroprom on this mod now and I'm here to tell ya ... it changes 'the game' ... a hell of a lot. Not that I don't like it, actually it's very cool, but ... it changes 'the game' pretty substantially from vanilla Stalker.

Who knows, maybe OP will find this is just what he needs in order to be able to 'get into it', but ... the game has been made fairly
'different' by this mod.
