Weirdest display problem ever!

Hey guys, I've been dealing with this problem for months and I'm now getting fed up with it! It's got me completely stumped!

I have the Sony Vaio VPCF122FX *AKA* Model PCG-81114L

It all started when I started using the laptop for gaming. It would crash after a 5-20 minutes of play. I monitored temps and figured it was instability.

I couldn't underclock the GPU (GT 300M) with the currently installed drivers (I have no clue what they were) so I went and got the latest Nvidia drivers. Installed and underclocked, all was good.

Then one day I turned on the laptop, and right before the Windows 7 Log-in screen appeared, the display shut off. Just black. It works fin up to this point though.

So, I went into BIOS to make sure all was well, and the only options are "Intel Virtual technology" and "C3/C6". Both are enabled.

So, I plugged in an external monitor....AND ALL IS WELL. The laptop screen works fine as long as you BOOT with an external monitor plugged in. The laptop can go to sleep, it can be unplugged, you can do anything as long as you boot with an external monitor.

I've installed every driver I could imagine has to do with display that is on Sony's website for this laptop. Other than the initial drivers for the 330M because they done allow under clocking so I'm stuck with an unstable laptop.

HOW DO I FIX THIS?!

The problem with Sony, as you probably know, is that the graphics cards in thier laptops only work with thier proprietary, modified drivers. If you can't get voltage or clock control through any software, well... You're in trouble.

1 option would be to open the laptop and apply better TIM to the GPU and CPU (which many people do). Another might be to replace the stock fan with a faster one if possible, or simply get rid of the dust, buy a laptop cooler, and hope for the best.

You could try to throttle the CPU in windows power settings to see if that helps with heat, or try to find fan control software.

It's not a problem with heat, I've already applied AS5 on both the GPU and CPU. Plus I cleaned all the fans. I've closely monitored the temps and they are fine.

It either needs to be underclocked or have the voltage bumped up.

Have you tried using msi afterburner with the stock (functional) sony nvidia driver?

Of you can't find a bios mod... Well, you might be stuck with Sony support.

So, looks like I'm stuck with an unstable mobile laptop, or a stable desktop? tongue.gif
