First time builder. Motherboard started smoking. Is it my fault?

So I was just finishing up my first build today super excited to get it running. After about an hour of double and triple checking everything and finally turning it on my motherboard starts smoking. I instantly turn it off. Now I saw the part it was smoking from. I think I will return it for a replacement however my questions are obviously is it my fault? And 2nd are my other parts salvageable? I'm really hoping they are. I've attached a picture of the part that was smoking along with the parts in my overall build. Any insight would be awesome. I'm not about to give up yet! But, this hurts ha.

I didn't use standoffs on my first build, and fried the motherboard. Thankfully it was just a school computer biggrin.gif

I wouldn't say it's your fault. I helped my wife with her build a few years ago, and the first motherboard we got only booted up once thumbsdownsmileyanim.gif
So we just RMA'd it and decided to get a different motherboard instead.

I'm sure your other parts are just fine. Just send the board back to where you got it, and maybe you'll have better luck on the next one thumb.gif

Just an incredibly frustrating process to spend days picking parts. Hours putting the thing together just to have the thing smoke on you. Looks like I will RMA the motherboard and hope the other parts work on the next go around! Thanks for all the help though. Really eased the nerves that it was my fault. Now I just hope the rest of my components are in good shape.

Before I started working on a new rig I test everything in top of the Styrofoam that came with the board. Just hook up the memory, cpu and DVD drive. Leave it running memtest over night before I start building it the next day.
