Overclocking Help plz i7-4770k Asrock z87 Extreme4 (now MSI Z87-G45) - Page 5

I'm going to give you some advice to help. I have a horrid 4770k. You are supposed to keep cpu cache ratio dialed in 200 to 300 mhz below at minimum your overclock multiplier. Ideal to set the same. However I can and am unable to overclock 1 mhz over stock when setting this setting to anything other than auto. My understanding is auto is 35 which is default speed for cpu. I am now able to at least hit 4.4 with 1600 mhz ram. Anything beyond 1600 mhz is not guaranteed at this point with haswell it may or may not get higher memory dividers depending on your chip. So far I am very unhappy with haswell and wish it never came out.

I don't understand how 4400mhz isn't just automatic. The motherboard has a preset for that... Lol.

What's your IBT or Prime95 voltage though? Mine runs 4.4 on Auto just fine...at 1.45V. Just because it can run 4.6 in Auto doesn't mean you should.

Well guys, i gave up on my asrock board, i now have the MSI z87-G45. Physically i like the board quality a bit better, the layout imo is better too. The 2 deficits i noticed but are not deal breakers for me are less sata ports and 1 less USB3 header on the board. The gains are better PCI-e layout, angled usb3 header, bios reset button on back that can be pressed without opening case. Additionally i like the Bios alot better. The splash screen seems to overlay on top of the windows 8 symbol during boot tho. Overall system boots more quickly too.

Have not overclocked yet, and just like the asrock board my xmp profile for 2133mhz ram loaded without issue. Got the board late yesterday and have fresh Win8 install, most of the drivers, and nothing much else. Gonna finish setting things up tonight and then try to ramp things up past stock.

Ill probably start with built in presets for OC and then tweak as needed. As others have said, some people seem to just be able to select a speed and it works, but it also seems fairly common to simply be stuck at or just over stock. Tonight ill find out if it is my CPU or the old motherboard that limited me.

As an addition i cleaned my H80i's thermal paste of the block and cpu and applied AS5. My first time using a paste that didnt come pre-applied. I probably did a bad job of applying it but currently temps are as low as 25 and seem to be just under 40 while in bios or installing software. This is in line with or a couple degrees lower then with stock paste. I tried to be conservative with applying the paste and used a plastic card to thin it out and spread it even.

Ill let you guys know how things go. Thanks for the feed back.

I noticing a trend that people can not overclock haswell worth crap. It is not user error, its quality of chips, i can't even get 1600mhz ram stable at default values on 4.0 ghz, my chip is really that bad. if I leave it on auto and not tune in voltage it is barely stable at 1.4 volts on 4.4. That is pathetic when ^^^^^ yes my motherboard has values for this as a present.

Yea im surprised at the variation in OC ability people are indicating. I thought for sure from reading reviews 4.4 was the worst case scenario. From my own experience and from what others say some people seem to not even be able to OC at all or just slightly above turbo boost speed. For a ~$350 "UNLOCKED" chip thats simply wrong.

The architecture and capabilities at stock are very impressive, but the expectation from a cpu at this price with a designation of being unlocked for overclocking is that...well...it will overclock.

The next few days for me will be a good indicator as well. I will have time with a second board to OC and compare to the other board. Having reseated my H80i i can see if i made a mistake the first time and if temps will drop. Ill see if OC'ing has any more success then before.

Good luck hope you can get better results with a new mobo. Just glad I didn't buy a 4770k not that there is anything wrong with the chips they are quite good. It's just I love overclocking and to get a K and having a bad overclocker would really get me frustrated :-).

Well interesting events...

Got the MSI board, and while I am glad I exchanged for it I still am unable to get anything higher then 4.0Ghz, lousy CPU it seems.

In terms of my cooler, I have reseated it 2 times. First time I spread a layer of paste on the CPU, I was getting temps over 90 at stock prime95 and decided to use the Arctic Silver recommended method of a vertical line. temps hit 100 in prime.

At this point im wondering if I goofed up my cooling block by cleaning the paste off with q-tips, coffee filters and rubbing alcohol.

I am also really disappointed with my i7-4770k so im getting amazon to replace it. Should have its replacement Monday. I get to once again re-apply the paste and will see if a new CPU works any better. If not ill give up and run stock frown.gif im just sick of fussing with it.

H80i i7-4770k Cooling questions

Looking at my temps its seems my cores always span about a 10 degree difference. Like my Core 0 will be 39 and my core 4 will be 29, there are almost never closer then 5 degrees. Is this normal or is this a good indication that i havnt applied paste right?

idle for instance i may be:
core
0 - 33
1 - 32
2 - 30
3 - 29

with a little bit going on might be more like
core
0 - 42
1 - 40
2 - 40
3 - 36

Is this just because each core after the first gets used less frequently?

Even at load ive seen a 10 degree spread.

Also whats the best method of applying AS5 and how do you clean it off? Ive been using q-tip/coffee filter with rubbing alcohol.

Its the same for me. you are good.

Literally the size of a grain of rice. Rice shape pointing top to bottom. Press down, twist back and forth a little, secure.

I know it sounds like not enough, but it takes very very little.

Common rubbing alcohol + Old white cotton t-shirt Is what I use.
