Please help out an audio noob!

Thread Starter
I'm looking to spend around the $100 mark on some audio for my PC (lower would be better of course). I watch TV and play games on my PC. I am completely open to recommendations on speakers or headphones. I have a ASRock Z77E-ITX with onboard sound. What do you guys recommend?
Don't say headphones or speakers because they serve two different purposes, would you rather headphones or speakers.

Most probably a dedicated sound card would be a good move to start off, but that leaves little room for speakers/amps etc

Maybe buy a card now and wait a while for a proper sound system?

Most decent speakers will have an inbuilt an amp so your post confuses me. Also if he's suggesting his budget is 100$ why suggest an amp? a) He can't afford it and b) it wont be any use as all the headphones that would need a dedicated amp would be too expensive. A sound card won't do anything for someone who has bad headphones/speakers.

Shoot for a $100 bucks you can't get much..maybe a pair of sub par beginner headphones headphones. I started of with Senn HD 201's which were on sale for only $15 dollars. That would leave you with some cash left to get a low end sound card or dac/amp.

I guess your mobo has a GPU on the only PCI-e slot?
So the only solution would be to get an external DAC/amp, but they cost waaay too much for your budget (if you want quality).
The onboard ALC898 should be pretty decent, compared to the total budget.

The Headphone recommendations are pretty good, choose whatever floats your boat.

For speakers, 100$ is a bit low if you dont want used ones.
Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 would be good but I cant find new ones for under 150$. Or Im just blind.

Yes, I have no room for a sound card, hence the onboard sound mention in the OP.

And yes, Headphones or speakers are fine, I'm open to both options. They both emit sounds coming from my PC, so they have the same purpose.

I have the logitech Z623 speaker system. It is $150, but you can get it for $100 if you watch for sales. I got mine at TigerDIrect for that price last year. It is a simple two speaker set wit ha sub woofer. I use the on board audio (realtek 889) and it sounds fine gaming or watching movies. I would recommend it.

I am thinking about a sound card, but I wonder if my speakers are good enough to notice the difference.
