Is DD-WRT required on the "main" router for a repeater bridge setup?

I have a wireless repeater bridge setup as described here:
http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Repeater_Bridge

Router #1 is a Netgear WNDR3300 (DD-WRT nokaid b14929)
Router #2 is a Linksys WRT54GL (can't remember the DD-WRT version but it's b14xxx)

For some reason I can't get a WAN link on router #1 since this morning, so the only way I can get Internet access is by plugging a computer directly into the cable modem. I can't figure out what's going on and it's very annoying.

I've had growing pains with that Netgear anyway so I might just go out and get a new one. However, since DD-WRT is not supported by everything, I might have a hard time finding something that's DD-WRT compatible in brick and mortar stores near me.

So really the question I have is: in the repeater bridge setup I'm using, do both routers have to use DD-WRT? I would keep the WRT54GL with DD-WRT.

I feel like I once read that only the client router needs to have DD-WRT so you can set it up as a repeater, but it doesn't matter what the main router is so long as the two of them support the same wireless norms. I can't find anything anywhere proving or disproving that.

So does anyone know? Thanks.

Welp -- no responses but I got my own answer smile.gif
Went out, bought a new router, set it up, and my repeater bridge upstairs started working immediately without having to do anything.
I did get a DD-WRT compatible router (Asus RT-N66U) but plan on leaving the stock firmware on for now.

It's only if the stock firmware doesn't support repeater functions (on the Router you want to use as the repeater) where you have to use custom firmware.

For example the Netgear WNDR3700v2's stock firmware does support it, but for others that don't you need DD-WRT / Tomato/ etc.
