140 dollar hard limit, need ram also. Advice needed.

Thread Starter
So like the title says I have a 140 dollar HARD limit that I can't go past simply because I do not have the funds for it. My current cpu is an athlon 2 x3, ram dd2 4gb (2x2gb sticks). I am completely fine with open box mobos, and ram if you can find it.

I also need some form of IDE to SATA converter as I have a 160gb ide drive and a 320gb, I think this one would do fine: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812186095

So we are at 130 for Mobo + ram

This is what I had in mind:
RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148654

MOBO: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128519R

Do you guys have any suggestions, I would like to get 8gb some time in the future and yes I already have non OEM windows disk and everything.

Trying to stay away from MicroATX boards as my current one in my Haf 912 looks absolutely ridiculous, Also staying away from >900 series chipsets as I MIGHT want to upgrade to steamroller.

I was also thinking of this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131873R
And maybe upping the ram to 8gb, 2x the ram I listed earlier.

I realize I would be going from an 8+2 phase to a 4+2 phase but does it really matter when the most I am going to overclock in it are probably an athlon 2 x3 or something like and FX 6300?

My current mobo is AM3 (not +) has a 95w tdp limit, and has absolutely no VRM cooling.

Why bother now? Your limit is so low and your upgrade is minimal... a mobo you wont notice, some extra/quicker RAM and converters for your HDD's which will not get them running at SATA speeds and unless the quality has improved in the past few years will just give you headaches. Why not save a bit until you can do a real upgrade CPU+RAM+Mobo+HDD all in one go.

While I do not know his situation nor does anyone else just telling someone WHY BOTHER NOW...is kind of rude.

Not everyone just has the money to toss into whatever upgrades they want and yes have to save for upgrades. Not everyone is the best saver. For some buying upgrades piece by piece is way for them to go. For others saving for several months or more is best for them. And yet for others they can just go out and buy it all at once whenever they want.

Whatever might be best for the OP only the OP knows and only him or her. Your answer really did not address what the OP was asking so was not really of any help.

I have been on all 3 sides of upgrading that I stated. Now my upgrades have to come when I can afford them piece by piece. One piece of advice to the OP is to have a clear plan of upgrade to what you want to end up with and do what is best for you.

I still stand by the MB I suggested as the better choice between the two you linked. It will allow you much better upgrade path as the next AMD CPU will also be AM3+ and no new MB chipsets have been announced for it.

Its not rude at all

It's perfectly valid to say why bother now as the limited upgrades it will buy offer little improvement. It's common sense to save up longer till you can upgrade properly. Why buy a new motherboard for the same CPU? What if by the time you finally can afford a new CPU that chipset has been replaced by something newer?

That's why I suggest he goes and saves

See above for why that's not clever when talking CPU and mobo

There is likely to be a new chipset on AM3+

That's not even a good 990FX mobo you suggest its a poor attempt with a 4+1 phase design. It's upgrade path is identical to the board the OP siuggested... as you clearly don't know this let me educate you.... 970 and 990 chipsets have the same upgrade path .

Now as you called me rude let me apply a clearly valid label to you..... you are ignorant

OP if you really want a good quality motherboard that will last and allow some decent overclocking here is an open box 970a-ud3, it is the only 970 board with 8+2 phase and heatsinked VRM's (it's a very good board) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128519R along with the RAM you chose that should be in budget however I still say don't do it you won't notice much day to day change at all.

LOL the 970FX and 990FX do have some differences...the biggest is the lack of SLI support in in the 970FX chipset and only x16 with x4 XFire. But what do I know I am ignorant. Of course it would help for the OP to say what his goals are.

xfire is mentioned nowhere by the OP or you (and technically you can xfire on 970 but you can't SLi) also it not called 970FX.

Rather than making you waste time desperately googling for a response let me help you

990FX - Four physical PCIe 2.0 ×16 slots @ x8 electrical which can be combined to create two PCIe 2.0 ×16 slots @ x16 electrical, one PCIe 2.0 ×4 slot and two PCIe 2.0 ×1 slots, the chipset provides a total of 38 PCIe 2.0 lanes and 4 PCIe 2.0 for A-Link Express III solely in the Northbridge

990X - One physical PCIe 2.0 ×16 slot or two physical PCIe 2.0 ×16 slots @ x8, one PCIe 2.0 ×4 slot and two PCIe 2.0 ×1 slots, the chipset provides a total of 22 PCIe 2.0 lanes and 4 PCIe 2.0 for A-Link Express III solely in the Northbridge

970 - One physical PCIe 2.0 ×16 slot, one PCIe 2.0 ×4 slot and three PCIe 2.0 ×1 slots, the chipset provides a total of 22 PCIe 2.0 lanes and 4 PCIe 2.0 for A-Link Express III solely in the Northbridge

and those are the only important differences (unless you count a 200mhz hypertransport 3.0 difference so important it makes 990 the more future proof board)
