Enterprise 1701 A Thank you :D And may my 3.2 rest in peace....

Thread Starter
This is regarding my celeron 3.2ghz and 2.4ghz processor's for my old socket 478 gateway rig, (845gvsr mobo).

Tonight I figured (friday evening), I'd try using the mechanical pencil and fix the 3.2 celeron D and it's "pins".

Ok, so I un bent them, properly... with the pencil thing, (took all led out of it, etc). And well. It's a useful tool, when your hand isn't shaking in fear of f*ing it up....

I took the 2.4ghz processor out, and in doing so, SOMEHOW (oddly), bent like 3-4 rows (outside to inside, middle set on another side), of pins (approx 15-30pins.....O_O). on the 2.4......!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

During which i'm freakin my beak going o "enter various custom slang here" alot....

So after taking a few deep breaths *still freakin here at this point*, I was able to de bend "approximately" all those pins, but it wouldn't fit still...

I was VERY frustrated with it, and de bent the 3.2, and IT fit in the socket but... you know the old phrase? Lights on but nobody's home? Well, literally after re applying thermal paste (nearly running out...) and heatsink on... (getting extremely good at getting it on/off in under 5 seconds.....). I turned on the pc, and.... well, the monitor's didn't activate.... *Checked for the 12v cable to the mobo, it was on fine....*. Anyhoo, after checking everything, I figured, hey, mb the bios reset, *plugs 1 of my 4 monitors into the integrated*, Same thing, black screen of blankness....

So... Now I figure it's mb a temp freeze, I hit the restart button a few times, the keyboard flashes, the cd drives do their light show, and again, my keyboard has no lights after the initial flash, and the mouse of course, no lights, no power to the usb's.

So the 3.2 is "in a sense" officially dead.... 3.2 celeron D, served me very well... GRR.... Oh and I saw a flashing red light bottom right of the pci slots, (bottom left = back of case / pci ports to the outside world). And it was flashing on / off like the street lights when they're goofed and flash red and yellow different directions.

I took a break this evening, watched a few shows, had a monster drink, And some marshmellows....

(Watched Numb3rs, and ghost whisper). Good shows btw from my opinion of course.

Now after all that, I got to thinking, why not for the fun of it, clean the cpu's (both) thoroughly with alcohol, etc. And I also cleaned the socket a bit (VERY lightly VERY carefully), the 478 socket. And cleaned off excess thermal paste, etc.

After all that, I figured what the hell, hook up my discman to the speakers, play some music, and relax/take time in unbending the 2.40ghz celeron northwood processor....

After what hurt my eyes, a good 60mins later, and 2-3 "socket checks" to see if it fits, finally I did a few more pin tweaks, and just put it in. It "almost fit" and I figured, to hell with it, pushed it down, (of course, that's like f*ing stupid, but I was at a point, meh, f* it, ). And it went in. I put the "locking" latch down, the processor followed properly (moved slightly as it should), I checked to see if I could pull it out (lightly, gently) and it didn't.

I unlocked it, took it out, put it back in, re locked it to confirm it was going to fit and stay. Then with the last few drops of thermal paste, re applied it to the heatsink, and throughly used a toothpick to CAREFULLY spread it around evenly approx, and so forth (slightly wider area then where the cpu would be, but more so where the cpu would be also). And just put the heatsink back on the 2.4 processor.

After hooking it up, etc. I figured, what the hell, turned on the pc, (making sure if I bumped any power cables, they were fully plug'd in properly).

Turning it on, like any old car, you just love the sound it makes, as it comes to life after so much hard work, and it just, was wow. I mean you don't know how good it is to see it come to life, after so much hard anguish and work. It was amazing.

Enterprise1701, I personally want to thank you for your simplistic but directly respectful help. The simple suggestion in another post / topic I started a few days back or so ish. The simple suggestion, to use a mechanical pencil.

In a sense, you saved my pc's life by reminding me of a simple yet highly effective tool.

Thanks, Very VERY much, thank you OH so much.

Le_Loup

*Wrote this post/topic from the gateway pc / 2.40ghz celeron northwood pc that is now alive and running*

Thanks

Just thought i'd fill ya in, I just ran today while I was @ work, the "burn in" testing program thing.

I literally almost max'd it (80% everything) and let it run while I was gone, I came back and it was blinking "passed" alot. Good news!

Again thanks man, oh and I like how you put 2gb + 2gb page file, i'm at 7.5gb but meh (2.5 on 3 hd's, ^_^ ).

I use toothpicks to bend pins back. Works pretty well. Once I mashed a S478 into its socket (because I thought it was in properly but the heatsink wouldn't fit so I just clipped the heatsink on and realized I probably broke something) and literally 100% of the pins were bent one way. After using the toothpick for an hour or so, it fit and booted with no problems.

Well I know I know, but I have to work for financing to acquire this dream pc i'm working up to in late january 2007 . It'll at least start with a 320gb hd, 1gb of ram and e6300, 700watt psu, and 680i mobo . (Backbone mobo/psu so that I can easily upgrade in the next 2-3 years if I want/need to for ANY reasons what so ever).

But thanks again for your thoughts, very much appreciated.

And yeah, I tried toothpicks, my "brand" wasn't strong enough... Plus I did this with a durned sprained ankle... evil thing. But yeah, the 420 watt enermax noisetaker II is impressive, and purdy. But my gateway can't use it's lovely pci express (2x) cables (power) cause... I have 3 pci slots, only.... plus I can't use the 6x sata plugs.... cause my mobo goes sata??? what alien world is that???

Thanks again guys, and enterprise1701, THANK YOU AGAIN!
