Good Fan and Controller Combos?

Thread Starter
I am refitting an older system where the motherboard only has two 4pin fan connectors (one is for the cpu cooler). It is a solid and stable quad core machine and works great for 3d rendering, but the case fans are dieing. I want to replace them with a more controlled set up that will use fans when needed.

My basic idea is partly an air cooling control test for when I get or build a new case.

My basic idea was to make a set up that where the fans are controlled automatically, so I don't need to keep checking during long rendering times. I was thinking that I would get 6 decent fans and a controller for all of them that worked based off of temperature sensors. Run the first two all the time (not necessarily at full speed), then add the second set of 2 and the third set of 2 as temperature builds. This would minimize the noise level to what is necessary.

I have seen controllers with 5 unit control. That would work also as I could simply attach one fan to the motherboard connector. Then have each of the 5 fans kick in at a specific temperature.

Fans must be able to be placed horizontal or vertical.

Any ideas or suggestions are welcome.

Here is the fan controller I use http://www.amazon.com/computers-accessories/dp/B004LKZESI. Here is a review http://www.techreaction.net/2010/12/16/review-sunbeam-rheosmart-6-fan-controller/. The nice thing about it is you can use PWM or conventional method of adjusting a knob. I have 13 Gentle Typhoons running in PWM and it works excellent thumb.gif

For fans I recommend these http://www.amazon.com/Scythe-Gentle-Typhoon-120mm-25mm/dp/B001Q6RUVO/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1370827506&sr=1-1&keywords=gentle+typhoon+ap-15. A little expensive but built like a tank and very quiet for the amount of air moved.

Hope that helps smile.gif
