Which gaming headset to buy?

Thread Starter
Im looking for the best gaming headset, but i don't really want a sound card (im picky the way the inside of my case looks :x) Right now im torn between Astro A40's and Sannheiser pc360's. I have seen the general consensus is that the 360's are better, so i am leaning that way. However will i NEED to buy a sound card to use these versus if i bought the Astros? I will be using them with my Asrock Fatality Professional-M motherboard.

Options:
1.PC-363D
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008O515CK/ref=ox_sc_act_image_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=AM2O1JUKI6X8W
2. Astro A40's
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009VLRPCK/ref=ox_sc_act_image_4?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A2KA3650E30JEO
3. PC360 + Asus Xonar DG
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0045JHJSS/ref=ox_sc_act_image_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER
4. PC360's with no sound card?
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003DA4D2U/ref=ox_sc_act_image_5?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=AM2O1JUKI6X8W

Conclusion so far: Option 3 (PC360 + Asus Xonar DG) would give the BEST sound quality.

Thanks for any input/suggestions

I use Astro A40's myself and i have no complaints - the mix amp pro is also solid and gives excellent sound quality. If you were to go the sound card route i'm a huge fan of the Asus Xonar Essence STX - some even say the card is top of the line when it comes to high quality headphones because of the built in headphone amp

Im a little confused as to what the mix amp actually does? Does this make it so a sound card isn't needed? Im sorry i really have no knowledge of the headphone market, or what to look for. I just did some research and found the pc360 & A40's to be good.

The mix amp basically gives extra power to the headphones and turns the digital (optical) signal into audio. You can hear a massive difference between using just the headphones in a standard headphone port and the mix amp. There are other options on the mixamp such as changing audio profiles for gaming/media and having multiple inputs for additional players and their mixamps etc. It also gives the headphones its "5.1 Surround Sound" feature.

The other option is to get a nice sound card and some good headphones and then just buy a clip on mic. A lot of people do that these days and it seems like the best option in most cases.

Okay so your saying my options would be
1. Get pc360 + sound card
2. Get A40 alone

So getting the pc360's alone (w/o sound card) wouldn't make much sense?

The A40's i bought came with the mixamp. It's all a matter of preference. It depends on what you are looking for - audiophile quality sound or good gaming features?

Either way i recommend either having a mixamp or a decent soundcard to get the best sound out of your headphones.

You can us the pc360's by them selves no problem - they just wont sound as good as ones connected to a decent sound card.

Thanks for all the help, i have a bunch to think about XD. I know the PC360's will work w/o a sound card i was wondering A40 V PC360 no sound card which would deliver better audio. These headphones would be exclusively for gaming, maybe the occasionally for music but very rarely.
If i were to get a sound card would would either of these work?

Not certain what you budget is, but Sennheiser has the PC-363D's (http://en-us.sennheiser.com/pc-363d). It has a USB connector that in a way will function as its own sound card, and is capable of 7.1, for gaming, it probably does the job well.

Very interesting idea with the USB version. Looks like its only ~$15 more so if i would get a $250 headset whats another 10 or 20 lol. Will keep that one in mind.
