I keep getting kicked cuz my ping's too high... i thought that was a good thing... how do i stop this from happening?

Get a better internet I guess. You need to get ping as low as possible, kinda like latency, the lower the better. Too high ping will drag server's responsiveness down, so that why they kick high pingers.

You want your ping to be low.

Make sure nobody is downloading or uploading while you are trying to play, as this increases your latency

Bingo, downloading at a stupid speed in utorrent
also is there a port i should be opening for steam? or a series of ports? i imagine that will help.

I guess is there any problem in your router.So try to reset it.
Here i will give other solutions to lower your ping.
1.Don't open any videos,stream and check if there any problem in your router.
2.Make sure there's no browser .exe's still running in task manager
3.Try to contact your internet service provider and get suitable data plan.
4.Move closer to your server.
When i had the same problem.My internet service provider guided this.So only i would suggest this ways.Now i have better ping rate.I checked my ping rate whether it's low or high using Whoisxy.com
