Graphics design typically uses OpenGL does it not? This would be a better case for AMD here. Go look at opengl benchmarks and pick the fastest gpu on the list that falls within the budget, be it team red or green.

This will satisfy both requirements, gaming and graphics design (plus any 3d stuff he may do), unless his chosen applications require CUDA. In which case, the 780/Titan is your choice here... and there would be less need for the expensive 3930 and motherboard to support it.
