Do I need an add on sound card?

Thread Starter
This is for my gaming rig which I use pretty much for racing simulation (iRacing and others). Currently I have a cheap 5.1 surround dvd player for sound, connected via the fiberoptic output of the on board sound card of my motherboard. I am looking to add a buttkicker gamer 2 to my system. Do I need 2 sound cards (on board and external) for this? Can a single card handle this? If so, will my on board sound card work just as well, or do I need the external for everything?
BTW, I also have my head phones connected by USB for chat only.

You don not need to purchase anything like that. What model of dvd/surround receiver do you have. What you will need to do is either grab a aux out of some sort from the back of that to feed the buttkicker amp with sound. I couldn't figure it out but if the amp has hi level inputs you will be fine no matter what but gotta figure that out.

If you need to call me 630-360-6884 I wont answer unless you text who you are first. Don't leave voice message since they are just transcripted to text.

I have done a few of the iRacing set ups and have installed a buttkicker once.

Do you race real cars on road courses because I know that is the main reason given for the ones I have seen built. My stepdad races spec Miata and he is hoping it can help him keep on top of it in the off seasons.

I just helped with this one not too long ago. No buttkicker on this one yet but there is already been drastic changes since the pictures.

Tons of donor parts where in the garage so a newer Toyota MR-S seat was chosen to reduce cost.

Anyways if you need some help figuring it out let me know.

That's not my rig by the way I run fanatech gear but the way we mounted the Logitech pedals upside down with the upgraded springs and sensors is AWESOME!!! Ended up mounting straight to the wood underneath without the original plastic stuff so you can space the pedals anyway you want.

The cheapy I'm using is a RCA RTD3131. It doesn't have an audio line out - just the hook ups for the speakers. Maybe I can connect the buttkicker directly to the sub woofer outlet instead of the sub that comes with the kit.

If the sub that came with the kit has the amp in the sub itself then you can just split the signal from the receiver so that it goes to both subwoofers... a lot of those dvd/receivers use a passive subwoofer so it would just be speaker wire going from the receiver to the subwoofer... if that is the case then no.

Otherwise yes that would work... the butkicker kit may even come with a splitter... don't remember. It may only have a 3.5 splitter and not an RCA splitter.

The sub is not powered and there are no coaxial outputs on it. Just the little speaker wire clamps

Then that is not an option unless the buttkicker has what is called high level inputs... if it has those then you would actually just get them from the front speakers by running to pairs of wires from the terminals one would go to the front speakers and one to the buttkicker itself.

You are talking about the buttkicker that comes with an amplifier not just the actual buttkicker itself correct?

Because if you are talking about the part without the kit that includes the amplifier then yes you could hook it up directly to the speaker terminals for the subwoofer instead of the subwoofer so long as the impedance on the buttkicker was not a lower resistance than the subwoofer that came with the surround system.

For example if the system uses an 8ohm driver and the buttkicker used a 4ohm it would probably be fine but could destroy the amplifier inside of the surround receiver.
