Gaming on a old Opteron 285 with a Radeon hd 6870

Thread Starter
So if you look at the second rig in my sig, I have a dual opteron system.
My question is how would a modern game play on this dual (dual) core system.

Not too well. While most games still dont utilize quad core, I certaintly dont see how dual cpu's are going to help you. From the videocard to the memory, it's just an old system. While you might be able to play some newer games, you're going to have to turn stuff way down to get playable FPS. I see frusteration in your future trying to play games on this machine.

Luckily everything on my main runs at max.

If you get a good healthy overclock on those processors....it'll probably perform about on par with an underclocked (2.8-3.0GHz) Phenom II quad. Yes, those chips are old, but their biggest downfall was they stopped at dual cores. It will perform on par with a first generation Phenom quad core clock for clock.

I'd say playable, I'd wager still a better experience than playing the same game on an Xbox360 or PS3. I have to wonder if there isn't more latency with 2 cpu's than a true quad. Might be closer to Phenom I x4 performance.

Id say go for it, and it should work. I played modern games on an amd 3800+ with an overclock before at medium setting with less video card than you have there. Also did the same with a first gen phenom....so I def support the idea thumb.gif
