7970 Power Requirements

Thread Starter
Hi,

I am currently running a Sapphire Dual-X 7970
http://www.sapphiretech.com/presentation/product/?cid=1&gid=3&sgid=1157&pid=1634&psn=&lid=1&leg=0#

And a 500W Silver Power PSU.

My GPU requires two 8-pin power cables, but my PSU only has a 6+2-pin, so I'm using an adapter, which draws power from two MOLEX and makes them an 8-pin, like in this picture:
http://imgur.com/yyLGc1b

My question is simply, COULD this be causing any problems for me? I won't go into details on my problems here, but quickly explained some games have been crashing for me, and I was wondering if this could be the reason.

Thanks,
Yrganjo

Hi,
How you can see in this link below if you are using CrossFireX™ system you need 850W PSU but if you run single card 500w PSU will be ok.

You can try this site for info how many power need your PC and then you will see clear picture.
PSU calculator
but it seems to me that you should at least have 700w PSU to all run smooth for single card. smile.gif

sorry for bad ENG

Crashing games could also be a sign of an unstable overclock, VGA Driver, Power etc etc problems. Could you provide a specific example of what errors you get and at what games ?? Also, have you tried running some benchmarks like Heaven 4.0/ Valley, 3D mark

I have the Vapor-X and I'm using Molex. Silver Power could be reputable need the line so we can google the OEM.

It could in theory since but I don't think so since 1 PCI-E x8 Pin isn't really going to crossload THAT much I think...

@Hujok I am only running one GPU and the sapphire page is stating that a 500W PSU is the minimum.

My PSU is a Silver Power SP-SS500 80PLUS green power 500w

I made another thread here http://www.overclock.net/t/1399210/video-games-crashing-not-sure-why#post_20153593 where I went into more details about my crashes.

I have also run a 3Dmark 11, and these are my results: http://cdn.overclock.net/4/4c/900x900px-LL-4c1ed2b0_3dmark11.png

My i7 3770k is currrently OCed to 4.5 GHz. Will try reset my BIOS settings. My GPU is not OCed at the moment. I have already cleaned up old drivers (following overclock.net guidelines) and installed newest non-beta ATI drivers.

I ran a reference Sapphire 7970GHz off a 2005 Antec 500 PSU. It ran just fine mining up until the VRM's on the card popped thanks to my Accelero.

Why your MOSFETs pop'd due Accelero? Is there somethig wrong with passive coolers from AC?

Sorry for OT.

Meaning it should be fine for my GPU, even with the 2xMOLEX -> 8pin adapter?

CHEERS..

They fell off (the heatsinks on the VRM's).

But yes, a 500w is more than plenty for ANY single card / single GPU system. That includes even a Titan. Just so long as its a good quality unit, which yours is.
