I have been looking at the Q8400 processor. Its a quad, and its got the same 6Mb of cache that my C2D e8400 has. According to the newegg reviews on the Q8400, 3.4Ghz is doable on all of the chips out there. But there have been some people who could take it to 3.6Ghz. Would that processor be a worthy upgrade? Right now I'm running my C2D processor at 3.8Ghz cause I was having stability issues at 4.0 as well as heat issues due to the power it took to get it there.
I only have somewhere in the area of $50-$70 for a processor upgrade right now. It looks like the only benefits of the Q9xxx series over the Q8xxx series is cache size, (which is more of an encoding thing than a gaming thing IIRC) and overclockability. Thoughts?
Well eBay is your friend when it comes to CPU's or on here if anyone is selling theirs. I would skip the Q8xxx series, you would have to beat that Mobo to death to get them to OC. I would go Q6600 or Q9550/Q9650. The Q6600 if you get a Low VID chip, should do 4Ghz on some good Higher end Cooler. The Q9xxx has higher OCablty and better Revisions and Cache, but cost twice as much.
If you want to jump all the way to Max 775. Go Q9550/Q9650. But if you want a Good Bang to Buck upgrade, grab a Q6600 for like $40 and shoot me a PM on the Specs of it and i will guide you from their
I got a lot of XP on 775.
Bottom line is with your budget, go Q6600 or if you can find a Q6700 for the same price, then that. Get a better cooler (Your rig don't say what you got) and let me know.
