PSU?

I'm sorry for posting this here, but the PSU forum seemed to be dead. It's a fairly simple question though (for people with the right knowledge). I just had a catastrophic failure on my PSU, so it burned my MB and CPU as well as itself. Thankfully the GPU/storage and memory survived unharmed (or I guess time will tell). So the question is, does anyone know offhand of any good PSU's at 500-750W that has standard cables that are long enough to reach the top of an 800D case? Last time I bought one I had to spend weeks trying to get someone that had an extension cable for the 4-pin CPU plug (the part supply is rather ****ty here in Norway), and that got fried with the MB and PSU.

I'm not too big on what brands to use, but from what I understand Corsair makes pretty good PSU's, and I'm tempted to assume their PSU's will fit in their own case? In any case, if anyone know it offhand, it would be much appriciated. Thanks.

I don't know the length of any PSU's cables, but I'll say one thing: brand names don't mean much in the world of PSUs because there are only 2 brands I know of that make their own PSUs: SeaSonic and Enermax, and I'm not sure about Enermax anymore. The rest of the brands use a wide range of OEM brands to make their PSUs, including more well-known manufacturers like SeaSonic and Super Flower. Be careful though because even within the OEM brands, there are good and bad units.

So unfortunately, it's next to impossible to shop for PSUs without some kind of a guide.

Before we shop for a new PSU, what PSU did you have? Also, how do you know it's the PSU for sure?

I would understand if you want to get right to the shopping, so if that might be the case, then my questions would be: how much can you spend, and can you order from Newegg.com?

Good to know. Didn't know there were so few manufacturers. then again, doesn't surprise me, same as with TV's (or used to be) where there were only 3-4 manufacturers of the displays, but the off-brand ones still cost half of the main brands... Sigh.

I had a Chieftec Super Series 750W (80 Plus rated) that started to get fairly old (pretty much exactly 3 years). Or, maybe not old, but it wouldn't hurt to get a new one I guess? It's served me well untill it died. I know it's the PSU as I had all my parts shipped to the place I bought it all. Or, it was either a connector or the main PSU itself. The CPU and PSU are both fried in any case. Along with the MB. I've had a good relation with the place I bought it, so i chose to trust them on this. They've refunded me several times before on DoA items and RMA'd stuff np, so I have no reason to think they're lying.

I'm in no immediate rush, I can't really use the new PC 'till next week anyway. Price I guess isn't too much of a deal, but maybe keep it in the 120 dollar range? give or take 20-30? From what i've seen, I should be able to get a decent one for that? I'm sure I could order from Newegg, but I would prefer to buy from relatively local shops. I could probably find anything local (web stores) but if not, I could probably set up an account.

Thanks for the quick reply btw biggrin.gif

I know 1 PSU with a very long 8 pin. And it's actually good.

It's the Fractal design Newton R3, made by ATNG.

And Johnnyguru review just to make sure it's good smile.gif The 8pin or cpu connector is 700mm or 70cm

You can also get it in 600W as you ask for

Oh wow i can see i have a minion now lol

Joke aside i can say as well that the Fractal Design Newton R3 is very good with a very long cable

The main problem with it seems to that no one wants it as to why i dont know that

Maybe its the price that scares everyone away
