Tuning Memory - Where to start?

Thread Starter
I have a QX6700 @ 3.4ghz and want to make sure the memory is working for me, I have never OC my RAM. Can someone take a look at my current settings and let me know what they think.

CPU - 283x12(3.4ghz Quad Core)
RAM - 2GB Corsair Dominator 800mhz @ 900mhz (445mhz, 5-6-6-21-25-2T)

Not sure if you need anything else, let me know, also the ratio is 7:11

Thanks

Your ram is the 6400C4's correct?

I would set your Vdimm to 2.1v. Then set your ram to run at 1:1 with your Core2 Processor @ 800MHz.

Set your FSB to 425 and your multiplier to 8. Your faster FSB will dominate the settings you have at the moment. Then set your timings to 4 - 4 - 4 - 15. This will give you a far better performance. Run Memtest www.memtest.org and if the timings work at 4 - 4 - 4 - 15, then try 4 - 4 - 4 - 14 and repeat memtest. Try for 4 - 4 - 4 - 12. You will end up with a FSB of 1700MHz, a dram speed of 850Mhz and a 1:1 ratio. Your CPU speed will be 3.4GHz.

Setting your ram faster than your FSB and raising the timings to get that extra 100Mhz will not make your system faster, it will make it slower. Yes, on certain benchmarks it will seem that your bandwidth is greater but that is because these "canned" benchmarks are isolative and not a true indicator of your total system speed.

Try loading a game such as F.E.A.R. with a digital stopwatch. Use your above settings and the settings I gave to test.

Try running F.E.A.R.S. built in game benchmark on both characteristics and I think you will see what I mean.

Very nice system by the way.

Thanks alot for that, but no matter what i do i cant seem to get the fsb very high at all and I am clueless with voltages so dont really know what to do =S

Will try the settings you have given me and raise the voltage a little to see how i get on, really helpful reply though, thanks again.
