First Intel Build

Thread Starter
Hey guys,

I have been a long time supporter of AMD and have been pleased with their performances. However, my buddy who swears up and down by intel has been telling me his performances and things of that nature, so intel has peaked my interest to say the least. Unfortunately a couple of days ago my PSU fried, so I figured now would be a good time to just start from complete scratch and try something new that will hopefully last me quite some time.. The build in question includes:

CPU: Intel Core i7-3770k Ivy Bridge 3.5GHz (3.9GHz Turbo) Quad Core.
Mother Board: Asus Sabertooth z77 LGA 1155
Video Card: GeForce GTX 670 2GB 256-bit
This is where I am a bit torn. I have read on forums that this is a great card, and then I have read that the 670 FTW is way better....Opinions?
Memory: Mushkin Enhanced Blackline 16GB (4x4GB) DDR3 1600
PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA 1000G2 1000W SLI Ready Full Modular
Cooling: Corsair Hydro Series H-100
HDD: Seagate Constellation 1TB Enterprise Internal Hard Drive
Case: Cool Master HAF 932 Advanced Blue Edition

If you guys could give any feedback like, "that's good, but I would do this", or something along those lines that would be great!! Again, thanks guys!!

1.) Overkill PSU. Drop that down to 450W or if you plan on SLI in the future, 600-750W depending on if you plan on OCing your system.
2.) What are you planning on using this system for? Rendering? Folding? Do you need HT? If you are just gaming and light video editing, go with i5.
3.) CPU Cooler is dependent on your OC and preference over Air vs Water.
4.) Why 670 and not the newer release?
Get the GTX 770 instead of the 670, a little faster for the same price.

See if you can get a 8GBx2 kit instead of 4GBx4 so you have room for later upgrade and with only 2 slots used it's much easier to identifiy bad sticks/slots.

Agreed PSU is overkill, a good 650-750W with 80+ gold would be enough for everything unless you do 3-way SLI.

H100i is newer and supposedly better than H100.

I don't know why you need an enterprise-class hard drive but that's fine, try to add an SSD as boot drive if possible.

I am a big gamer (Wow, BF2, Soon to come DayZ Stand Alone, Planetside 2, Etc) and am looking to get into some rendering etc.

As for some of the clear overkills (I know they are) I am looking to build this once and hopefully have that last through wear and tear(This last PSU that just fried was literally the 3rd PSU I've replaced in the past 1.5 years. It was a 700W). And are you talking about the newest release in the 600 series?

The H100 is what I have and it's not even a year old I would say, so I figured I don't need to replace that. And yeah, maybe I should lower the size of HDD, save money and get SSD for OS...I have tossed this idea around.

Agreed.

You would be better off getting a WD Caviar Blue 1TB or a Seagate Barracuda 1TB. If you want quick boot times, put in a simple 128GB SSD.

You never told us your budget!

Oh yeah!! haha Sorry, I'm looking to stay below $1200-1300. So, if I were to go without the SSD, you're saying go with WD Caviar Blue, or Barracuda? or you saying get those along with SSD?

CPU: Intel Core i7-3770k Ivy Bridge 3.5GHz (3.9GHz Turbo) Quad Core. You could game just as well on an i5 but why buy ivybridge? Its old news haswell (i5 4670k or i7 4770k) is the new thing

Mother Board: Asus Sabertooth z77 LGA 1155 This board needs renaming noobtooth its overpriced there are asus and gigabyte boards as good or better for less money and without the stupid "armour"

Video Card: GeForce GTX 670 2GB 256-bit Again old stuff get a 770 its better

This is where I am a bit torn. I have read on forums that this is a great card, and then I have read that the 670 FTW is way better....Opinions? Its the same card just different clocks at stock

Memory: Mushkin Enhanced Blackline 16GB (4x4GB) DDR3 1600 8GB is enough for gaming if you did stuff that needed 16GB you wouldn't be here asking these questions

PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA 1000G2 1000W SLI Ready Full Modular LOL wut? seriously you don't need this. Not only is it silly overkill it wont even run at its best efficiency due to it being so overkill. A QUALITY 650W is more than enough for this build and a 750W would be overkill

Cooling: Corsair Hydro Series H-100 There's newer and better than this. Have you considered high end air coolers?

HDD: Seagate Constellation 1TB Enterprise Internal Hard Drive errr why? did you just pick the most expensive?

Case: Cool Master HAF 932 Advanced Blue Edition

Hi Waffle

I have a few questions which should help us to create your build.

1. What are you going to be using this rig for and at what resolution monitor?
2. Where are you buying from? i.e newegg, overclockers.co.uk etc
3. What is your budget?

He is going to keep his Corsair H100 cooler. There is nothing wrong with buying Ivy Bridge. For him, he would be better off buying an i5 Haswell chip non-k if he doesn't plan on OCing.

I will get started on a quality build for your budget.
