really? pixel editing? i thought i was bad just going to 100% magnification to see if images are sharp....

Lightroom 5 was actually released today. It's available stand-alone (upgrade is $79 I believe, $149 for full version). As indicated above, Aperture is more comparable to Lightroom than iPhoto.

Also, what functional purpose does editing individual pixels do?

Well, I guess I am over OCD about it, but I'm an Architectural Draftsman as my profession, and At work, pixels matter, I only get down to per pixel level when i'm doing some editing on a small object in a relatively large photo

both are excellent. Lightroom is an extremely capable photo editing platform that is overlooked by many just because photoshop has been around longer and is a kinda household name or at least a term used to describe an edited photo
