URGENT: CAN I CUT THIS (video card edition)

so recently got arround to putting my other XFX 7970 into my WC rig. First one went in without a hitch, EK waterblock fit perfectly and got my temps nice and chilly. Second card not so much so. Same card model, same waterblock model, but one screw hole just doesnt line up and my temps are worse than on air with this card now.

Picture of a reference card board with offending hole circled:

screenshot of my temps (note the extreme difference in max temp hit between the properly fitting card and the one with the missing screw):

so what do? I cant RMA the card at this point because I removed the stock air cooler, the block has already had distilled water (dye free) run through it so im not sure EK will rma the block (or if that will even fix the problem). any chance i can take a file to this hole and widen it a bit to get the screw and threading on the block to line up? or am i just sitting here with a very expensive problem thats going to require an expensive solution?

You can put the stock air cooler back on ...

Check with the other block and see if the block was mal-manufactured or if the card was. Given that the aircooler fit I'm assuming the block had a problem ; even if it had distilled water run through it, their block was off so they should RMA it

xfx puts " warranty void if removed " stickers on all the screws around the gpu on the stock cooler, rma there is a dead end.

I figured that was what i was going to have to do though. just really was trying to avoid having to break down the gpu section of my loop right away. im going to compare the stock air coolers on both before i tear this rig back down, its functioning fine at the minute for making posts on the internet and using pandora, so id like to keep it intact as long as possible

Well of all the options mentioned, filing out that mounting hole on the card's PCB is IMO by far the worst. If all else fails, I would just leave it unscrewed.

I agree with dmanstasiu, if the EK block was machined improperly you have an extremely strong and clear case for having it replaced.

Have you looked over the video card boards to see if there is a difference in revision number? Compared the two air coolers to see if there's a difference? You could also compare the location of the mounting holes between the air cooler and the waterblock.

If the fault or difference is with the card, are you sure you'd be denied an RMA on the card for merely removing the air cooler? Plenty of people use alternate air coolers, and I'd be surprised and disappointed if XFX's warranty forbids using them.

only applies if you live outside of the States. if you live in the States, those stickers don't apply to you. You may still apply for RMA.

From XFX's warranty info for Radeon cards:
Quote:
** XFX has carefully selected the optimal thermal or fansink component for your graphics card model. We do not encourage the removal of components due to damage that may result in the process. XFX understands that some enthusiasts may choose to replace the original component with their own cooling solution. To support the gaming community, we recommend that you contact XFX prior to any modifications so that we can update your profile and product registration to avoid potential issues with warranty support. In addition, XFX support will be able to walk through the installation with you or provide feedback and pointers on available options for your specific product. You may even consider shipping your components to XFX and allow the technicians at XFX to perform the modification for you (shipping charges to XFX apply).

The other relevant language excludes damage caused by a third-party accessory, which is not the case here, assuming it is the card which was off spec.

I'd recommend you contact XFX with your problem, showing differences in the who cards.
If work comes to shove, leave it unscrewed, you've got quite a few screws holding it on already
